Arts Late, Great

onRobert Altman has died. He was 81.
Of all his films—titles like M*A*S*H and Nashville and McCabe & Mrs. Miller (not to mention The Player, Short Cuts, and California Split [and Kansas City, Gosford Park, and the criminally underrated Popeye])—it’s his version of Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye, featuring a genius performance from Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe, that remains my favorite. I’ll be watching it tonight.

With as many dead people getting reported here on slog, I'm surprised The Stranger doesn't have a page or two every week for Obituaries.
wow. because he was so prolific, i never really thought about the fact that he was old, or that he would die one day. you really get the feeling that he could just keep reeling off great movie after great movie for years to come.
how heartbreaking.
I liked Elliott Gould's performance in the Long Goodbye as well--he was very good at playing jaded world weary characters in Altman films. The ending of the film was a bit on the shocking side.
Gould as well as George Segal delivered knockout performances in California Split.
Altman did a great job of reflecting american culture and politics in his films, particularly in the 70's. His naturalistic improvisational kitchen sink filmaking was perfect for that era.
This is so sad. Robert Altman was a genius who wasn't afraid to fall on his face (Pret a Porter?). The scene of Lily Tomlin watching Keith Carradine sing in Nashville is one of my favorite movie moments of all time, and if it hadn't been for Altman's Short Cuts, the world may never have learned firsthand that Julianne Moore is a true redhead. RIP Mr Altman, you led a glorious life.
3 Women by Altman is one of my all-time favorite films:

I love Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall in this..Pinky and Millie.
Re: No. 1.
To heck with the obits. I'm surprised The Stranger doesn't organize a dead pool game.
And I agree about the Popeye movie. Great film.
RIP.
And I'm with number 5. Out of all of Altman's great films, Three Women is a high water mark of brilliant weirdness. RIP Mr. Altman.
oh gosh. he was a great one. i'm with you on the long goodbye. it is genius.
you should take mr. altman's departure from this mortal coil as an odd reminder to have a happy birthday, bradley. his departure has brought to mind one of one of your favorite films, which you will enjoy this evening, the date of your birth.
sometimes sad news brings good news. i think that is nice.
same goes for you, schmader.
O*v*e*r R*a*t*e*d.
Agreed on 3 Women's greatness. Loved that yellow motif with the women and the Gremlin car.
And Shelly Duvall as Olive Oil in Popeye was one of the all time great method acting performances.
The Long Goodbye is my favorite too. I am also a big fan of Nashville, A Wedding, and Brewster McLeod. I might not have liked all of his films, but I always looked forward to the next one.
RIP. He’s the last of the "Golden Age of TV" directors turned film makers... back from the days of likes of Rod Sterling... a pioneer, especially at a time when you worked as a director only in TV or movies, not both.
I didn't like all of his films - and some of them, I downright disliked - but you had to admire his vision, his innovative nature, and his courage, whether you enjoyed his work or not. And he brought out the best in all the actors he worked with over the years. He'll be very much missed.
R.I.P., Mr. Altman.
Bradley, I'm not sure if you've heard it yet or not, but there's an interview with Elliot Gould on NPR's site this afternoon regarding Altman:
