I'm guessing that would be Alex, Christy and Elliot.

Suddenly Gayle's long-suffering stare downs from the video clip take on a different meaning.

Oh, but as for why he didn't step out of the car, it just hit me: he's using his 11 and 14-year-old sons to shield himself against the tougher scrutiny of the big, bad reporters. To a lesser degree he's probably using his oldest daughter and his wife to the same end, but they're old enough to understand how they're being used.

What an utterly unprincipled man.

Talk about the living embodiment of "trying to dig yourself out of a hole". How people like this can be intelligent yet so so stupid....

That kid in the backseat in picture 8
looks like 'Damien'. Look at his scoul, its evil. I don't know wether the boy wants to strangle the reporter or his dad.

I think he looks like he enjoys it. He's got some kind masochistic martyrdom thing going.

You could say maybe he's just a non-stop chipper guy no matter what, but compare his attitude now with his freak out in Richard Dawkins' "Root of All Evil" documentary. When he's annoyed, he acts annoyed. But this stuff doesn't annoy him, because he digs it.

Whatever is going on in his head, the man is scary.

Wow, what a powerful clip.

First off, in response to the Mars Hill pastor's comment about pastor's wives letting themselves go, I think his wife looks totally doable. Distressed, perhaps, but maybe she needs, you know, someone to comfort her in her time of need... ;)

Second of all, the guy's so obviously lying through his teeth. The way he glances at his wife whenever he denies using meth or when he claims he just visited the prostitute for a massage... his eyes are so shifty.... clearly he's trying to be consistent with the lies he told his family to get out of hot water, but he's going down, and going down hard.

God, this is so rich.

How can people be so intelligent yet so stupid? It's because they're trying to live a contradiction. They're trying to squeeze themselves into this contrived lifestyle dictated by the Bible and puritanical mores which is in total denial of their actual desires and is ultimately a form of insanity. These people aren't stupid, they're insane.

Nice flip-flop, Dan. How anyone can have a single iota of sympathy for this piece of human garbage is beyond me.

I can't muster much sympathy for his wife. She has stood by him all this time that he was disparaging the loving and committed relationships of gay couples and their families. Shame on her. But I do think that an interesting line of questioning if he continues to spew these unbelievable explanations would be to ask if he ever got massages from men when he was home, or only when "on the road". Did preacher man Haggart tell his wife about his on the road massages?

What "long-suffering stare"? She knew who she married -- just like McGreevey's ex-wives. I have no sympathy for these women whatsoever. Pathological fag-hags the lot of them!!! You wanted to marry a gay man, didn't you now hon. Well DEAL!!

It's probably nothing, but this guy has a funny habit, on display at 1:37 with the meth and sex questions, of ending his head-shaking "no" with a yes-implying nod of the head.

Dan,

A masseur is male. A masseuse is female. I don't think you meant to say that Johnson was a nelly. Or did you? And, if so, where do you get off passing judgement on the butch-impaired?

But seriously, thanks for pointing this out about the kids. The man's clearly figuratively hiding behind skirts and knickers.

How would you like to walk the gauntlet of school lockers after that? Let's all pray those kids are getting some shitty Christian homeschooling.

Elenchos, I've been thinking the same thing about how he seems to enjoy it. I think it's kind of an exhibitionist thing too. All that intense Christian-love bonding he's had with all those hottie associate pastors over the years has now been transmuted into one big televised Dionysian splooge.

"You could say maybe he's just a non-stop chipper guy no matter what, but compare his attitude now with his freak out in Richard Dawkins' 'Root of All Evil' documentary."

I saw that clip and Dawkins' freak-out was the scarier one. He was very, very upset by Haggard's beliefs, to the point of suddenly snapping and angrily yelling at the minister. Why?!
Why on earth does he care what other people believe? How does it affect him personally?! Due to Dawkins' lunatic obsession - not with evolution but with his insistence that everyone else must follow HIS beliefs - any weird behavior on behalf of Haggard is easily dismissed.

And I agree with Dawkins' beliefs on evolution, of course. I just think he's nuttier than the Fundamentalists he harrasses with his approach.

Dawkins is a fairly highly respected scientist in his field. Very passionate. But, yeah, he comes across pretty tweeky in front of a camera. He'd be better off having someone else be the reporter.

No doubt: Dawkins would piss off the Pope. I'd probably want to smack him if I ever met him, and I don't really disagree much at all with Dawkins' ideas.

It's just funny how easily an off-the-rails rabid anti-religionist could get Haggard's goat, yet getting ambushed by a TV reporter and asked about his gay sex life and drug habit in front of his wife and kids seemed almost to cheer him up.

Haggard likes getting whipped and shamed. He likes it a lot.

"Did preacher man Haggart tell his wife about his on the road massages?"

The massages this is about happened in Denver, but Haggard is from Colorado Springs.

Supposedly, he goes to Denver to write his books. I've heard of authors going to secluded places to write, but Denver doesn't seem ideal. Surely Haggard has rich friends with mountain cabins or ski resort condos he could borrow off-season.

Anyone know what the gay scene is like in Denver? Dan?

If a person were a closeted preacher in Colorado Springs, and they wanted to get away to a cruisy city for some semi-anonymous NSA gay sex, where would they go in Colorado?

I wouldn't be surprised if other playmates come forward.

Um, the entire state of Colorado sucks, and sucks hard. Denver scene 10000 times better than CO Springs, but other than that, dead and Christian.

At least his kids are learning about 'gay' at a young age. I hope that means they won't grow up like Karl Rove, who started slapping down Gay Rights the day after his big gay dad died.
I hope they grow up understanding some people are gay and some people aren't. And that it doesn't matter, as long as you don't build yourself a big closet of self-loathing with a spouse and kids.

I read one xtian in response to this story say ...."The truth is, I am Ted Haggard, we are all Ted Haggard, and Ted Haggard is all of us. And may God have mercy me, on Ted and on all of us." What on earth are you talking about?? I sure as HELL aint Ted Haggard. I don't snort lines of METH of BOY WHORE cock while leading a huge flock of sheepish christians in a mega church who's policies seek to BAN GAY MARRIGE!! He is a hypocritical scumbag. Look at his wife and kids, nice one CLOSET CASE! Every ounce of suffering this twisted FAGGOT gets is deserved as he has warped the brains of so many young with his assinine "theology". You xtians crack me up...on the attack on others who don't believe, but when one of your own is shown to be a CRACK WHORE, it's all forgiveness time. Pathetic. Hypocrites.

I have to say, I feel a bit bad for Haggard at a human level, and the poor wife and kids.
The other evangelists (practically any of the bast*rds), I'd be doing backflips and unseemly climaxes of joy. Or Santorum. Why, gods, couldn't Santorum been caught in this situation?
I see the pictures of Haggard and family, though, and they really look broken.

Good that it happened, they want to legislate us back into criminality, exposes their movement's hypocracy, etc.

But geez, wish it was one of the super jerky ones...

What the Christians mean by that is that they see us as all struggling to lead good lives despite the temptations of a wicked world. The implication is that when somebody slips, we should be sympathetic; none of are perfect.

But that would go down a little better if Haggard had led his life with the meekness, lovingkindness, and humility that my Christian friends tell me is supposed to be part of the package.

On the other hand, I wonder if we couldn't use a little more of that on both sides. Ask yourself: if you were Haggard, or perhaps easier to imagine, somebody close to him, how would you be most likely to learn the error of your anti-gay ways? Through a lot of frothing hate mail? Or through the sympathy and kindness I've seen shown to people (yes, even those under the sway of Fundamentalist Christian nonsense) struggling with their sexual identity?

If he can't tell his kids the truth, I don't mind that he is publically humiliated in front of them to be forced to tell the truth.

How do we know either of his children aren't gay? They sure could be. And this "force" of having their dad speak out may let them realize that they shouldn't be ashamed to come out - only to be ashamed if they practice one thing and do another.

And if they are straight - maybe this will teach them that there are more gays out there then they think, and that being around them isn't such a bad thing.

Because their dad wasn't going to teach them that. So, I'm VERY GLAD the kids were there to see it.

Reminds me of Republican Congressman Reynolds holding a press conference to talk about his involvement in the Foley Sexual Predator Scandal at a preschool and Reynolds refusing to allow the reporters to question him without the 4-year-olds present. Reynolds rented the room in the preschool and asked to have the kids surrounding him while he fielded questions in hopes (and he was successful in this) of avoiding the most pressing of questions. He literally used those kids as shields and Haggard used his own kids the same way. This is how low Republicans will go to avoid questions about their involvement in sex scandals that run contrary to their anti-gay rhetoric to the electorate.

Screw her. She's been complicit in his bigoted ways for years. Hopefully those kids will weather this storm, and maybe come out of it as better people than if none of this had never happened. Maybe they'll see that the human emotions and soul are more complex than the narrow interpretations of the King James Version that their parents espoused.

Sorry, I can't muster much sympathy for the wife of a bigot.

She was silent when he was spewing all that hateful talk about gays and marriage.
And I find that reprehensible and un-Christ like.

How I would love to be in their house this weekend.

I do feel sorry for the kids but maybe Daddy's truth will allow his kids to grow up knowing the reality of true Christian forgiveness.

I call bullshit. After watching the video yesterday and then seeing the picture of the kids, I'm convinced this reporter thing was all a set up by Haggard. There have got to be lots of local reporters who want an interview with the guy. Yet, one reporter and her camera operator are at his house and just happen to be there when he's leaving? And he slows down and provides a polite interview with the family in the car?

Nope, it's bullshit. I suspect Haggard called said reporter up and told her that he was going to leave the house at said time and would give her an exclusive. Again, why only one reporter staking out the man's place? Because security booted everyone else off of the property.

The whole thing was an elaborate ruse in an attempt to salvage his image by allowing him to talk directly to his followers. It failed and now he's out on his ass today. Do I feel sorry for the kids? Yea, because not only is their Dad a widely exposed hypocrite and liar, but he's a coward as well who uses the media and his family as tools to manipulate in his attempt to maintain his empire. For shame.

Folks, don't feel too sorry for anyone in Pastor Ted's family, after all, they are filthy rich and will survive quite nicely-you've seen the multimillion dollar "Worship Center" that was built through the generous thithe of the cult-like following Pastor Ted and New Life Church has? His bank account is right up there with good ole James Dobson's, after all they both head up the most prestigious, wealthiest religious organizations in the Western US Bible Belt (Colorado Springs).

Being a lifelong Colorado Springs resident I predict that Pastor Ted will back in the arms of his loving congregation in no time at all, after all, once brainwashed, forever brainwashed. The lambs of the flock will follow along, led by the nose of whoever is leading them around, believing whatever they are told to believe, opening their pocketbooks and giving until it hurts. Pastor Ted and his family will be fine, New Life Church will be fine and religion in Colorado Springs will be just fine. It takes more than a little public embarrassment to keep a bigot down.
