A drug that contains a component of red wine has been shown to increase endurance. Not only is this good news for Charles Mudede, and me, but it also furthers my sneaking suspicion that we will all one day take performance enhancing drugs as if they were vitamins. Now if only I could get my hands on some EPO.

So, the study last week that used "much more moderate" doses of resveratrol (according to this article here) used the equivalent of some thousands of bottles of red wine a day. How many millions of bottles a day is Charles going to have to drink to become a champion athlete, then?
Technically, it is possible to manufacture pills that deliver doses of resveratrol in the ranges needed, at a reasonable price.
But it's more fun to use it as an excuse to drink red wine, IMHO.
An interesting prediction - one could argue that there's a slippery slope that starts with things like protein powder and ends with steroids, or maybe cybernetic implants, or having your brain transplanted into a robot body or something. But, I don't think anything with nasty side-effects will ever catch on for widespread use, especially not while so expensive. I think it's not a simple slope, but that there's a solid difference between good nutrition for athletes and body-altering substances; protein powder and similar supplements just help you supply the necessary nutrition for being active and building muscle without having to eat beef or tuna or tofu at every meal. I think there will always be a large contingent of people who are uncomfortable with anything beyond that.
