Comments on Gay Marriage to Remain Legal in Massachusetts

I am so proud to be from the one state that believes everyone should have equal rights. I can't believe how many states voted for bans on Tuesday. One day we'll all look back on this and wonder how our country could have been so backwards.

I still say this is all moot, since under NAFTA and Free Trade, we are required to recognize legal marriages in Canada (which include gay marriage).

At some point, some state will try to enforce their ban, and be in violation of an international treaty, which under our US Constitution has a greater force of law than any law passed by Congress or a State.

Period.

Get some gay married couple to get sick in a no-gay state and watch the archaic laws crumble beneath the weight of international law.

I hope you're right. So far, the US has a pretty piss poor record of respecting international law. Until this week, we were on our way to being the world's wildest rogue state. Hopefully that will change.

I don't know about this strategy in Massachusetts - it's going to be easy for the gay haters to portray this as an underhanded move to get around the majority's opinion. If the majority opinion really is against gay marriage, then I guess this is the best thing that could be done, but if not, a chance was missed to deal a blow to the gay haters by allowing it to go to a public vote and be defeated.
