I actually feel sorry for the old man. Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for the family members of the victims more, but still.

I think anyone over the age of 70 should have to take and pass a driving test every year to renew their license. It just makes sense.

It's rare that sending a 90 year man to jail would serve any public good, but in this particular case, the severity of this mans actions coupled with his appearent lack of remorse or personal responsiblity - I think gramps should've been sent to jail. $10 says he get's back on the road, license or not, before his death.

Giving this man LESS than a slap on wrist sends a bad message.

Before everyone get's all "old people should retake the driver's test every year", statistically, they don't hold a candle to teenagers.

Whoops, Monkey beat me too it.

Oh don't get me started on teenagers. They should have two years of drivers training STARTING when they are 16 and then able to get their license at age 18 (I think in Europe you have to be 21). They should also have to take defensive driving and adverse conditions driving courses that actually teach them something useful beyond learning to park.

But still, once you reach a certain age things change more rapidly than every four years. It just makes sense to test once a year past a certain age.

Well, if he is remorseful, it's news to me. I lived in Santa Monica when this happened, and the old dude was such a bastard about it. It's one thing to say, "Yeah, I'm old. I shouldn't have been driving. I will be haunted by the tragedy 'til the day I die."

But he was like..."I'm old. I lost my faculties. Everybody should have gotten the fuck out of my way."

As far as one could tell by all accounts at the time, he was completely without remorse.

Ditto, Monkey.

IMO, 21 seems about the right age. I got my license when I was 18, but never used it until I was 23, which felt only slightly overdue. Unfortunately, parents don't want to have to keep chauffeuring their kids around. Thus they buy'em a tank-size SUV "for safety" on their 16th birthdays, send them on their way, and fight every bit of legislation that might raise the age limit.

Cars are more dangerous than cigarettes.

He was dying before he got behind the wheel that day, and is probably why he killed ten people.

Mandatory driver testing past 65. Now.

And this way the California Dept. of Corrections doesn't have to pay for the old assbag's medical care.

75 is an important cut-off for elderly drivers. Most elderly drivers are incredibly careful, safe drivers, but, once they turn 75, they start getting confused easily. Get them behind the wheel on their 75th birthdays, then again every ten years (assuming they live that long).

it says in that article that there were "previous accidents" and that family members didn't intervene before it was too late. i don't want to point a finger, but if my dad is driving at 75-80 i will sure as hell be certain that he is fit to drive. this to a certain extent is the responsibility of family members, but mandatory testing at a certain age or after at-fault accidents would be a good start.

The old fucker should be made to listen to the victim's families statements 24 hours a day until he dies of natural causes or kills himself. If he was really sorry I might have some compassion for him.

I'm all for making teenagers wait longer until they drive, but it should be coupled with better transportation. The same goes for older folks. In so many areas, people have to drive to go to work, get groceries, go to a doctors appointment. I live in one of the SF surburbs (not the boonies) and we don't have bus service on the weekends. Pathetic.

The judge's comments actually made sense. The man is bedridden and has significant heart disease and the judge didn't feel that the taxpayers should have to pay for his medical care. He wouldn't have spent any time in jail because the facilities do not have the appropriate support for his condition so he would have been sent (on your dime) to some sort of hospital/extended care facility. (If you really want to be outraged, look at the costs of those places per day.) With any luck he'll have a long drawn out death with many days of fighting for each breath to punish him for his callous attitude and criminal irresponsibility. And have his entire estate liquidated around him to pay the fines levied and his medical bills.

I know this is an incredibly emotional case, and I feel terrible for the families of those killed - but the first thing I thought when I read about the probation is that at least taxpayers won't be paying for the guy's medical expenses.

As for drivers licenses - I'm 36 and have never had one. I went to a high school where students were not allowed to bring cars on campus (which I support). I was bummed at the time to not get my license, but it's become less and less of a priority over time. I live near Seattle Academy, though, and I get to see teenagers driving SUVs while talking on their cell phones all the time. Quite annoying.

Unless he has faboo private health insurance, he's going to be a burden on the taxpayers anyway, and the chances are that at his age, his health insurance is not private. He's no doubt on Medicare, so you and I are going to pay for him to die comfortably. Given that situation, I think that fucker deserves to die in prison while being raped by gang members. Ten dead and seventy injured, some of them severely. He only stopped when the body of one of his victims became lodged under his car. In fact, he should be kept alive for another twenty years so he can suffer longer. He was utterly remorseless and must be punished.

Make the old bastard suffer. In 2003, six months before Russell Weller went on his killing spree ('pedal error' what the fuck is that shit?) I was hit by an 83 year old man driving a pickup truck who didn't see me on my motorcycle. I spent 55 days at Harborview and lost my left leg below the knee, the senile old assbag who hit me? He got a ticket for failure to yield right of way and when I was lying in the gutter bleeding with two compound fractures of my leg didn't even come over to check on me. So I have no sympathy whatsoever for Russell Weller, he should be kept alive and in as much pain as possible for as long as possible. The senile old assbag showed no true remorse, failed to show up for multiple hearings and has generally shown himself to be a miserable excuse for a human being whose insincere protestations show no true appreciation for the magnitude of what he did or any contrition or acceptance of responsibility. I hope that the families of the his victims take him for every thing he has so that his worthless relatives, the ones who knew that he shouldn't have been behind the wheel, don't get one thin dime from his estate when he finally dies.
