Dollar Coins, YAY, Nixon BOO!

posted by on November 20 at 16:59 PM

The dollar coin is coming back atcha, but minus those loser ladies that appeared on the failed 1999 and 2000 batches.

I loved and spent my Sacagawea dollars, like a good citizen unafraid of the fickle U.S. mint, but I’m just not sure about more dead presidents. Especially when, as forecast for the year 2016, Richard Nixon gets his turn on the merry-go-round.

I don't know why they keep up this futile exercise. Americans just don't like dollar coins. I never got a single Sacagawea dollar as change; as far as I can tell they never really circulated at all, just got stashed by collectors.

The cash machines at the post office use them, but that's about it.

On the plus side, the Nixon coin will be bugged for security purposes.

Re #2: And the Post Office is phasing out stamp machines, so in another few years there won't even be that use for them.

If you want people to use dollar coins, you have to take away dollar bills. Which should have happened ten years ago.

I would LOVE to use dollar coins, but I never freaking get any. I agree, get rid of the bills.

"I don't know why they keep up this futile exercise."

Because completely replacing dollar bills with coins would save $500 million a year.

Did you ever hear the great Dave Edmunds song "Worn Out Suits With Brand New Pockets"?

Every other civilized country in the world has a coin worth a dollar or more, and their pockets are doing OK. Do you hear Canadians, Brits, Europeans, or Aussies moaning about their pockets?

This amusing polemic against pennies seems apropos:

People won't take to dollar coins because the US won't formally phase out the dollar bill, so it'll fail. When will the Mint learn?

I'm from Canada, and having a dollar coin does rock. We also have a $2 coin here though, which is kind of ridiculous. It's too much coinage.

Collectors are exactly the reason the mint keeps up this "futile exercise." Because of seignorage, the mint can make, well, a mint from collectors snapping up these coins and taking them out of circulation. If Clinton dies in time to get a coin with his face on it, I personally will lovingly collect them.

It's kind of ridiculous that they say "We think Americans are going to want to collect the series, and that will drive the coins through the economy."

If Americans are collecting the coins, doesn't that mean that they're just getting them and holding onto them, rather than driving them through the economy? Isn't that exactly the opposite of what they want?

And yeah, I get the Sacajaweas sometimes at the Post Office and dutifully spend them, but whoever gets them probably just turns them right in at the bank.

"Sacajawea" is a fine euphemism for dollar, though.

If they could get vending machine, parking machine, and laundry machine vendors to take them, it'd go a lot farther towards gaining acceptance.

They made great bus tokens, too, until Metro yonked up their fares.

I don't know that I like a presidential series. Do we really want to honor Warren Harding, James Knox Polk, Buchanan and the Booshes?

Another problem: back in Vegas, I'd have vendors refuse dollar coins and $2 bills. You would need to formally mandate that all new currency be accepted. As it stands, business exercise their right to refuse service to anyone, even because of what they feel is 'strange currency.'

Dollar coins suck. They're about the same size as quarters and easily mistaken as such. Plus, the mint is denying the statistical fact that fewer and fewer people actually have interest in using change. Change is becoming a defacto savings account as people keep more if it in jars than in circulation.

Beaides, who wants to be the asshole holding up the line acting like they're going to win some prize for finding four pennies in the bottom of their purse/wallet/pocket to make exact change. Fuck, I wish meters took cards.

The Canadian dollar is slightly bigger than the quarter, has flattened edges, and is coloured gold. A child could distinguish it from a quarter.

Besides, American paper bills are all the same colour and size but we don't hear too many complaints about telling them apart.

I actually find the two dollar coin handy. Fewer things really cost just a dollar, and I never bother to carry dimes or nickels (forget pennies).

Those of you who listen to the Howard Stern Show regularly will know of me.
0n July 4th of 1990, I broke into president Reagan’s Beiair, CA retirement home because I believed him to be the antichrist. Well, now he is dead. And I thought that I’d have to give up my campaign once he died. But now the United States Mint wants to send the whole country to hell with the release of the Presidential Dollar Coin Series.
If my original theory is true then coins with Reagan’s picture on it could be said to equal the “Mark of the Beast, without which no man may buy or sell.” By weird co-incidence I released a new video with that information on Saturday the 18 of November without being aware that the official announcement was to come the following Monday.
Since then I have sent news releases to the major financial journal including the Wall Street Journal and the money writer at the Associated Press. I can only hope and pray that someone picks up on the story.
I am currently writing a booklet called: How to buy and sell without the Mark of the Beast, It will be available as a free download from www.GregoryGordon.com Official release date is 7-7-07. But it will be available for previews by February 6th,of 2007 which is Ronald Reagan’s Birthday. Any website that reviews the booklet and provides a link to my site will be given a free download of: Ronald Reagan: Image of the Beast, Or why I threatened to kill both Bush and Reagan.
