Slog - Comments on Blasphemous Rumors?

I just got a bit of Capitol Hill club gossip from Hot Tipper Christopher, who writes: I have heard more then a few rumors that the Vogue is on the move again. From what I've heard, the Vogue is moving from its current location to a location near the Mercury. The kicker is they may be changing the name of the Vogue to....Spanky's Hideout. Now these rumors are from the goth kids, so perhaps the cloves and absinthe have made them (more) demented, but this is what I have heard. A call to the Vogue found only an answering machine...

This just in from ace gossip-monger Adrian Ryan:

i don't know about "spanky's hideaway" or whatever, but i've heard from an employee that the vogue is just outright closing. done. no money, no more interest. so. also, the cuff, is, rumoredly, evaporating also. so that makes the bus stop, manray, the cuff, cha cha, the vogue...a mortuary of clubs. that's what seattle is.

I think a theory on these closures is all the deeper-pocketed elder hipsters growing up, moving on and leaving the clubs behind. Hipsters my age and younger don't have the cash to throw around that the elder types did. Kids these days hang out at home or go to $5-10 concerts at random watering holes. Clubbing is overpriced and losing its luster.

weird. i was just discussing the vogue last night with someone. i've only set foot in the place a couple of times since it moved from 1st avenue but, man, i've got some fond memories of the old vogue.

that original location was a storied joint, rife with seattle punk rock history and debauchery. from what my hazy memory can recall, it was always good times. plus, my sister timmi worked there for ages, which is probably why my memory is so hazy.

i do remember that the folks running the vogue were good people and always did a nice job of catering to their specific crowd. if money woes are at the root of their rumored closure, i'm real sorry to hear it.

one more thing: i think the pending sprinkler system requirements also have a lot to do with the future for many of these smaller, specific crowd venues.

there are a lot of worried bar owners right now.

With the continuing evolution of the internet, I think the older hipsters also spend more time blogging and playing wizards of warcraft. Like other middle aged people, they (we) don't have the energy to hang out every evening at the clubs.

Went to the old vogue upon moving here in the late 80's: Saw White Zombie (when they were still a scuzzy noise rock band) and Mudhoney on the same bill.

Comment by One Who Knows

OK, it's clear that none of you know any facts about this.

One, the 'Spanky's Hideout' reference in this context refers to the neon sign that used to hang in the 'play area' of the old location in Belltown, and since the move to the new location has been hanging over the bar. Anyone who actually goes there regularly will get this reference.

Two, *nothing* has been decided for certain yet, other than the current location is closing. If the club reopens, they cannot use the new name due to some screwed up legal reasons regarding the current lease, so they are just toying around with new names.

Three, there *IS* signifigant interest in keeping things going. Many locations have already been scouted, and there are some frontrunners. No announcement will be made until a place is chosen. It would be desireable to remain east of Broadway along the Pine/Pike corridor, and there are some promising places being investigated. I think the frontrunner location will surprise everyone in the club/performance scene if it does happen.

Four, the reason the current location is closing has nothing to do with anything people have speculated about on this thread. When a formal announcement is made, perhaps they will mention why they are moving out.

I for one would be sad to see the club close, I have gone to the Vogue for over 11 years before I left Seattle.
I wish Monny and Shawna the best and hopefully they will take a better name, Maybe Exile (for those that are close they know) best wishes I hope to come back soon and see.
