“Because Hating Yourself is the Greatest Love of All”

posted by on November 9 at 9:30 AM

On last night’s Larry King Live, the compulsively edgy Bill Maher made up for his iffy Halloween costume by coming out swinging against closeted gay Republicans.

The money quote: After Maher outs RNC chair Ken Mehlman, Larry King asks why a gay man would publically take anti-gay positions, to which Maher responds, “Because Larry, hating yourself is the greatest love of all.

Closing twist: In the west coast feed of the show, Maher’s outing of Mehlman is edited out. See the edited clip here.

I love when he says "Maybe you don't go to the same bathhouses."

Larry King should have been taken off the air decades ago, but every now and then his craptastic interview skills let something like this happen on live television and make all of the inane banter worthwhile.

Larry King is like a blank canvas, he tells his guests to paint on him. Interesting things often happen in that environment. No, he's not Charlie Rose.

BTW here in SF, CA. I saw the Maher interview and the Mehlman crack was included No editing.

Of course CNN edited the clip. If they didn't, someone was gonna start throwing around words like "Anderson Cooper" and "network hypocrisy."

Interesting theory, Josh, but you'll have to remind me of the anti-gay legislation Anderson Cooper's dedicated his life to passing...

Ken Mehlman: Gay? Ken Mehlman: Gay! Ken Mehlman: Gay.

I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around this.

I saw the interview @ 6pm or 6:30 or whatever here in Seattle and the Mehlman bit was in there.

Looks like the outing video has now been taken down because of "copyright" issues. Hah!

There are multiple copies of it on YouTube now. I just watched it at http://youtube.com/watch?v=pRBC4jX4IYk a moment ago.
