7,000 Votes to the Senate

posted by on November 8 at 11:39 AM

From Talking Points Memo:

George Allen’s trailing by about 7,000 votes — quite a margin to make up in a recount. And it seems that’s something the Allen camp has realized.

They say they’re still not sure whether they’ll call for a recount.

If we don't win Virginia, it might be better in the long run. Dick Cheney will be forced to take bad vote after bad vote going into the 2008 elections.

I could almost agree with you save for one thing: The Senate confirms all Supreme Court nominees.

With Alito and Roberts, things have gotten quite conservative, and will be for decades. Adding even one moderate to the mix would be a significant improvement on things like containing executive power.

YAY!

What's going on in the Burner race? Why do both CNN and NYT have only 31% reporting? We even did better than that here in Cook County, IL - with marches to the Board of Elections and scuffles in the alleys to boot.

Yeah, this whole notion of "gee, aren't we glad we didn't win now so we can win later" is a crock - as is the notion that the Dems should turn gutless in victory out of fear that they may offend their critics going into 2008.

Fuck that shit - kick em when they're down. Hopefully the Dems can walk and chew gum and will push new positive programs at the same time they use their newfound subpoena power to hold the Bush crime family and their enablers to account.

The Rethug outrage machine will find a reason to be mad where none exists, and their buddies in the SCLM will let them, but that's no excuse for doing nothing.

Has a recount ever gone well for the Dems? I have a feeling they could pull 10,000 votes out of their asses if they needed to (mostly from the recently deceased).

I have to agree with Golob (2). But at least we have Montana.

And, yes, a recount has gone well for Dems. Just think of US Senator Maria Cantwell - she picked up votes.

And Gregoire.

But neither of those fine ladies was running in cracker Virginia.

Gillsans,

Don't forget the recount here for our WA governor, Christine Gregoire. We almost had that insufferable Bush clone Dino Rossi, but Ms. Gregoire beat him in the recount by 125 or so votes out of 3 million cast. Major Dem victory!

3. WA slows their vote count postings after the following morning. Next post is due around 6-7 pm this evening. This is so they can make strong headway in counting the remaining votes, rather than having to update constantly.

Also, with their last fingertip-grip on any control in Congress hinging on the Senate seat in VA, I'm pretty sure the GOP will make VA recount those votes, even if it'll do little good.

As for Virginia, those crackers are going to need some cheese to go with their whine!

Funniest wingnut commentary from last night (before today's Rummie announcement): Kathryn Jean Lopez at the National Review posted "Now that it's past midnight, I begin my Santorum for SecDef Campaign". Genius.

OMFG, Santorum for SecDef - how insane would that have been ...

No, wait, this is even funnier: Hugh Hewitt is calling for Santorum for SUPREME COURT JUSTICE! Is there medicine you can take for that?

The buzz on dailykos right now is that the Allen campaign is not going to ask for a recount. Bear in mind that Virginia has both a Democratic governor and a Democratic secretary of state; fixing the vote for Allen would be very difficult.

Washington state has only a small percentage of the vote tallied as yet, in large part because of the high percentage of mail-in ballots. Washington allows ballots to be tallied if they are postmarked by Election Day, which delays our outcomes somewhat. Many counties in the state are all vote-by-mail, and the most populous county, King, is about 60-70% absentee. Those take longer to receive, validate, and tally.

Hewitt needs to walk down a dark alley soon. I'll pay for the crowbars.
