Slog - Comments on Yeah Library!

Starting tomorrow, November 1, the DVD-checkout period is being extended to two weeks. Good news for those of us without cable who get an entire season of a television show at once. Ever tried to watch a whole season of The Sopranos in a week? It isn't healthy for the psyche....

"Ever tried to watch a whole season of The Sopranos in a week ...?"

I have. Season 1, which went from not bad to bad by about episode 5. (If it isn't written by ur-lib David Chase, it's probably not worth watching. Even with a Queer Eye subtext.)

Look, the overdue fine is .15 a day. Cheaper than a movie rental. You watch the single dvds first, then hold onto the multiple sets after their due date.

I frequently returned library movies late as my own version of civil/corporate/library disobediance.

I totally agree with Rubyred. You can afford $1.05 for an extra week. I think a better policy would have some relation to the number of DVDs in the case - 2 or 3 for a TV series, then two or three weeks. Another possible policy could be to make it two weeks for DVDs that were released a year or two ago (i.e., new releases have a one week lending period). Waiting 6 months to a year to see a new DVD sucks, and I think most people can afford a $.15 per day fine if they need more than a week.

I've watched my roommate gun it through a season of ER in a week, and it ain't pretty. I'm glad they're extending it, but I'm not sure why they don't just split up the series so you get 1 or 2 discs at a time?

About frickin time! I used to check out DVDs from the library, but when they made it one week, I said to heck with it and stopped. Sometimes it was a 6 DVD bundle (like Maison Hikkoku) and there was no way I could watch that many in a week ...

I went through season 3 of 24 in two days. It's only about 18 hours total without the commercials or 9 hours per day. I did season 1 in about 5 days.

Towards the end you start to feel as exhausted as the characters on the show.

You never split up the series sets - what if you get them out of order? (had to watch Alias season 2 before season 1. then watched season 2 again. but that was when you got them for 3 weeks)

When I broke my back, I watched every season of the Sopranos (that was available on DVD) in one week. It took me both inward and elsewhere - the healthiest thing possible for my psyche. The valium wasn't so bad either.
