Shades of Thurman Munson.

More like Strike 3.

Only thing is when Munson got killed, ny sports fans grieved as if it was the president or the pope that died. I don't believe Lidle will have that star appeal, particularly after the way he pitched in game 4 against the Tigers.

Somone keeps throwing this up on Wikipedia, under Thurman Munson:

"Thurman Lee Munson (June 7, 1947 – August 2, 1979) was an American catcher in Major League Baseball who played with the New York Yankees from 1969 to 1979. Munson was killed at age 32 while trying to fly an airplane for Cory Lidle Airlines."

I totally have to keep my mouth shut - I made a kind of lame anti-Yankees joke elsewhere about this, and immediately fifteen people called me a douche. Bad me!

Is the subject line in reference to Lidle being a picket-line-crosser in 1994-5?

Hmm, I just read that after the plane crash, the Pentagon scrambled fighter jets to provide air cover to several cities, including Seattle.

Because if we can't laugh we'll just hi-jack a Greyhound and crash it into into a Kinkos.

Ethnic insensitivity version:

Because if we can't laugh, we'll just hi-jack a yellow cab and crash it into a 7Eleven.

So...am I behind on what's what or are you guys completely fucking assholes making light of this?

I mean, don't hold yur breath for Shawn "Kasey Treat Healed The Zit On My Ass" Alexander to learn how planes work and start flying them into planned parenthood on 20th and Madison. It just ain't that kinda party.

Seattle. Always a bridesmaid, never a gay bride.

The Yankee cracks and comparison to Thurman Munson aren't appropriate given the context of Lidle as a player and a person. He was with the Yankees for less than 1 season and, frankly, I am shocked that anyone would think that the value of a person's life has any relation to their team's popularity. Being a Yankee doesn't mean that someone is a bad person. Would people be saying mean things about him if he'd finished the season with Philly? Is everyone so callous and jaded now that they're incapable of feeling sympathy for the fact that a very talented person's life was cut short? That his wife is now a widow, his son has no father, and his parent's outlived their son.

Thurman Munson was with the Yankees for 11 years and was the team captain. He was well-liked by players and fans and, no, mourning him wasn't like the pope had died - few people knew the pope personally or watched the pope work a hundred and fifty days a year. Many New Yorkers knew Thurman Munson as a person and as a player.

Strike? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

Schmader, you're a prick. I still remember you flippantly writing something to the effect of "apparently it's the worst day in the world or something" in your "Last Days" column about 9/11. Maybe someday someone close to you will have a public death. Then we can all laugh at you...

Actually, if Lidle was still a Philly, he'd have no reason to be in NYC, let alone over NYC airspace. If he weren't a Yankee, this crash probably never happens.

You're right, Gomez, I must be an idiot. The mechanical difficulties on his plane were obviously caused by the Yankees and New York. He could not possibly have had mechanical problems on his plane if he had been in Philadelphia, because, of course, it's such a tiny town with drastically better weather.

"Being a Yankee doesn't mean that someone is a bad person."

It DOESN'T?

Shit, NOW you tell me.

Thanks for completely misreading my statement and taking it out of context, Dew.

I was actually throwing in a point, irrelevant to the ongoing boo-yay Yankees debate, about how circumstance played an ironic role in Cory Lidle being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I didn't bother to elaborate because I was in a rush, but clearly, given the rush to judgment from certain others, I probably should have.
