The Truth Hurts

posted by on October 31 at 15:48 PM

The thing that is most despised in American politics is the truth. What John Kerry said about the types of people who are stuck with fighting the war in Iraq is not only true but it’s a truth everyone knows. It is the poor and uneducated who are paying for this war (and all other wars) with their lives. But the truth is not what matters, as this press release by the Washington State Republican Party makes clear:

Cantwell Joins Kerry Despite Offensive Comment About Troops “Silent Senator” takes campaign cash but won’t condemn remarks Seattle Sen. Maria Cantwell honors former presidential candidate and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) at a campaign fundraising event today in Seattle, but refuses to condemn Kerry’s remarks against the troops in Iraq and return the campaign cash from today’s event, said Washington State Republican Party Chairman Diane Tebelius.

“It’s deplorable that Senator Kerry would belittle our troops who are fighting terrorism in Iraq, and it’s inexcusable that Senator Cantwell would say nothing to defend our men and women in uniform, but instead honor John Kerry in Seattle and take campaign cash from today’s event,” Tebelius said.

Sen. Kerry said that: “You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t you get stuck in Iraq.”

Fighting terrorism in Iraq? How can anyone say such a thing and not feel embarrassed?

Kerry wasn't referring to the troops, he was talking about Bush's moronic policies. The R's are openly lying and the press is letting them get away with it.

Not only are they lying, most of the media never call them on it.

From the huffington post:

Below is what Kerry actually meant to say, which I got straight from the Kerry team, which Kerry uses all the time.

"I can't overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq." - Senator John Kerry

I thought he was referring to the troops. Not well-worded if he was implicating Bush, but I get it.

Either way, Charles is right. Although there are some very intelligent and highly educated people in the armed forces (especially skilled positions (eg, pilots) and special forces), the majority of the ones hunting IEDs are not A students. Further proven by Bush lowering the standards for admission into the armed forces.

Whether he meant to or not, this keeps 'it's the war, stupid' at the front of the debate in this election. Good job, John.

I know a number of military families that prove wrong Mudede's pathetically ignorant claims. Learn to get beyond stereotypes.

Fuck you, W. Yeah, there's always exceptions to the rules, but most kids go into the military because they are poor and have no other opportunities. DUH. dumbass. That's like saying the Iraqis are not pissed that we botched the occupation, because there are, like, 4 out of millions of Iraqi civilians that are still glad we invaded.

It's the ignorant red state types that join the military. Hick, rednecks, and inbreeds.

I can only speak from my own experience, but after two and a-half years of high school AFROTC, I quit because I suddenly realized that about 75% of the kids in the program who were planning on careers in the military were dumber than a box of rocks.

Example: every Friday we'd be tested on some aspect of military history, protocol or procedure. Every Thursday the instructors would go through the test, question-by-question and we would drill the answers - to the ACTUAL test we'd be taking the NEXT DAY - and guess what? Right. Most of them still couldn't manage a passing grade.

So, I figured, no way in Hell was I going to put myself in charge of people like that.

Audrey, if childish lefty twats like you and Charles could make it through training you'd see that folks in the services are above average. Many have highly technical jobs and others are looking for college money to better themselves.

Right turn -- there may have been some smidgen of truth to that up until a couple of years ago. But that hardly seems to be the case any more.

Numerous stories on the recruitment difficulties of all branches or the military -- esp. the army -- have pointed out that as recruiting has become harder standards are falling. Dramatically so in some areas. So yes, the poor, the uneducated, the no-other-options folks are the ones that are going to Iraq.

The real problem Compte, is that people like that end up in charge of you. It gets real old taking orders from idiots.

And yes, I know that there are a great many very intelligent, worthy people of the highest ideals serving in the military. Hell, some of the lifers even fit that catagory. And Right Turn is correct, there are a good many jobs in the military that are highly technical, that require a good deal of training and education. And for awhile (during the Clinton years) the military was aiming it's recruitment at kids who wanted to go to college, but didn't have the resources. Our Idiot-In-Chief destroyed all that.

But the fact is, there is always a large percentage of morons, bigots, and those people who just don't have any other good options in life serving in our military. It's been pointed out that the military has lowered their standards in the past couple of years to fill recruitment goals. What's even worse - and unreported - is that they've lowered the re-enlistment standards, so now (as it was during Vietnam) those lower standards are moving up the chain of command. And that's what drove me out of the Marines with a bad taste in my mouth.

After posting the above, and thinking a little more about this war, and the quality of our armed services, something dawned on me.

This is the first PROLONGED war this country has fought with an all volunteer military since...the Revolution! Or maybe the War of 1812, depends on the definition of 'prolonged'.

American Revolution-8 years,all volunteer

War of 1812-32 months, all volunteer

Mexican-American war-22 months, all volunteer

Civil War - both sides used the draft

Spanish American War - 4 months, all volunteer

WWI - draftees used extensively to fill ranks

WWII - draftees used extensively to fill ranks

Korea - draftees used extensively to fill ranks

Vietnam - draftees used extensively to fill ranks

Gulf War - how many minutes did that last? All volunteer
