Hastert is not the only one they are trying blame for the Foley scandal. Yesterday the head of the Family Reasearch Council and Bay Buchanan both tried to tie the scandal to "a culture of tolerance" and of course on all homosexuals.
Don't be suprised if the White House and other GOP leaders pick up on that same line of bull. It served them well in the past two elections.
The Stranger folks... please, please, please refuse the urge to use "-gate" as a suffix to mean “scandal”. You all know exactly how annoying that is and all the diatribes against it. This time, Page Boy Scandal works just as well, not “Foleygate”. We all must fight to eradicate the use of "-gate" for every single fucking scandal already.
Sheesh, a person would think the suffix "-gate" was part of the Chicago Style Manual already.
Not in the Morning News but...
Dan was that you and your kid plus another last night at the Scissor Sisters concert?
Another great show. Jake hopped and danced around that stage even more than the previous three shows here in Seattle. Ana was her fab self and the balance of the band was tight and fun.
Fucking seatbelts are just a scheme by the GOVERNMENT to keep you alive and paying their unconstitutional taxes. You show 'em Helen!
Poor Helen. She was definitely batshit crazy with a cherry on top, but that's what I'll miss about her.
Maybe today I'll hug a "warm-climated person" in her honor.
Sounds like her daughter-in-law got a perfect result: throw the batshitcrazy M-I-L out of the car and kill her, but everyone else in the vehicle is unhurt or suffers only minor injuries. Whew!
What Foley did was wrong, but it’s because he was taking advantage of young men with whom who he had an unequal power relationship. It was unwanted sexual harassment, pure and simple.
When I was 16, I had it off with a 25 year old. The awesome 80’s movie, Krull, was playing on TV at the time. How’s that for ambience? Anyway, I had no illusions it was going to lead to a relationship – I was ready to get with any reasonably attractive man who would have me. And I was completely competent to make that decision and practice safe sex. Was it legal? Definitely not, because the state we lived in had sodomy laws at the time. Was it morally wrong? No, because I was mature enough to make that decision. Some 16 year olds are ready for sex and some aren’t, just like some 25 year olds are ready for sex and some aren’t. The AOC in our red state was 15 at the time - it’s probably 35 now.
I’m not excusing Foley’s behavior, I’m just pointing out that while he may be a sexual predator, he is not a pedophile based on what we know so far. A lot of the right wingers and media seem to be throwing around the words "gay" and "pedophile" like they're synonyms, when we don't know for sure if Foley is either.
Some have theorized that closet cases are attracted to unusually young partners because they are emotionally frozen at that young age due to the intense repression required to deny their sexual orientation. These juvenile IM’s may anecdotally test that idea. Any other theories?
Dear Stranger:
Please feel free to continue using the word "gate" when refering to scandals. It may not be an "offical" word YET. But the legitimacy of words is no longer the provence of language experts. Words are democratic. They become official by popular usage and not at the whim of any "Style Book".
The only "problem" I see with any of this is that Foley is a Republican and the Republicans are flaming hypocrites who deserve the very worst that they can get.
Foley was elected to a powerful office, seemingly for life, and he was out to enjoy some of the traditional perks of power. Why get power in the first place if you can't use it to please yourself with young boys, young girls, Middle ages MILF's, etc.? It was fine when Ghengis Khan did it, when Caesar did it, when Clinton did it, and I have no moral qualms with Foley chasing some tail while in office. Hell they didn't even really "do it," which makes this while thing even more of a non-issue.
As for the 16 year old boy, I can only imagine it was a genuine turn-on to be courted by a powerful figure with access to some serious goodies. A ride in a BMW and the promise of extravagant gifts? Hell, I'd play too. 16 is plenty old enough to know what sex is and what Mr. Congressman is talking about when he's talking about my underwear.
However, I do take issue with the fact that Republicans exist at all. I think they are all twisted sickos who prefer war, torture and racism to charity, honesty and sex. For these reasons, I would like to recommend that Rep. Foley is strung up by his balls from the top of the Washington Monument and then set on fire.

Most sensible words ever posted on Slog.
Please don't equate this with Clinton's affair with Monica. She was at least over 18. Whether Foley was writing to a male or female page, it's a crime. It was apparently committed during work time and using govt computers.
And if you want to argue that these kids were old enough to go along willingly, why did Foley sponsor legislation that made it illegal to solicity sex with someone under the age of 18?
Ginger,
Foley sponsored the legislation because he's a member of the Senior Anti-Sex League. They can't let people get off and feel all content and satisfied - that reduces war hysteria.
actually...i don't know that it's criminal. but it's close. and totally hypocritical.
just look at this clip of Foley in 2002

More news for the day: Woodward was at least right about a CIA briefing happening on July 10, 2001 http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/287302_rice03.html
lol @ Fnarf.
I'm sure they gambled in Vegas, but it seems that Helen left her unlucky streak across the pavement.
RE: Helen Chenoweth
I'm not one to laugh at others' misfortunes, but HA HA HA HA HA HA!
I mostly liked what happened during Clinton's years, but to be objective, even though Monica Lewinski was an adult, Clinton abused his power by messing about with her. It was a classic example of getting involved with your boss, and the woman always loses. Not that I care so much about Lewinski, she may have been a Republican plant for all we know, but Clinton definitely had the power position.
Now, if he'd been off to a motel with someone who didn't work for him, that would have been plain old adultery.
As for Helen Chenowith, good fucking riddance.
