Slog - Comments on The Male Pill

And, no, I'm not talking about Viagra. Men could soon be able to use a 'male Pill' that has no side effects... Scientists have discovered a substance that can temporarily block the development of sperm without altering testosterone levels and without causing unwanted side effects. They hope human trials of a new contraceptive for men based on their discovery could begin within a few years....

There are actually two in various stages of clinical trials, and both are connected with studies and research at the UW.

No, it's not a joke.

But ... the main question is, how much do you trust us guys not to "forget" and knock you up anyways? It's not like we get pregnant ...

So, if you're married or living together and you both eventually want kids and all, it's a good thing. But you need to trust your partner. Same of course is/was always true for men when women "had" to do all the birth control.

Interesting side effects too, but not as much as those women have to deal with, from what I've read.

it's a nice option for when you're in a trusting relationship, the girl doesn't necessarily have to be the one possibly fucking up her body with chemicals in order to have sex without condoms.

i don't think there's such a thing as a pill with no side effects. they'll find out it causes brain cancer or something.

How much do guys currently trust women not to "forget"? I agree with KY@3: nobody should trust another person with his or her reproductive fate. Such a pill would be a good thing not because it will relieve women of responsibility, but because it will give men a better way to protect themselves.

I can only imagine how many men would become rapists if only they didn't have to deal with the inconvenience of buying condoms first...

Seriously though, was that a bad joke or is it actually the most brilliantly asinine thing I've ever heard? The logic is mind-boggling.

I wonder what the Pope and his ilk will think of this. They seem to be silent about viagra. Those pills for E.D. are used by older men who are likely not into starting a family. That would mean viagra is used for sex without procreation, A major no-no for some Catholics. Viagra is for the most part a recreational drug.

Comment by Geni

There are an awful lot of guys who live in fear of being "trapped" into 18 years of child support by a woman who's too flaky to take birth control, or who deliberately doesn't use it. For those guys, I would think this would be the answer. (I'm thinking specifically of one guy I know, who's trying to gradually break off with an increasingly clingy and importunate female. I would not put it past this particular female to use unethical and indecent methods to keep him tied to her.) I believe the women who would do such a thing are rare (after all, they're the ones who suffer the primary hardship of an unwanted pregnancy), but they do exist.

I believe BOTH partners should be equally responsible for birth control. Now, in a committed relationship where both are in agreement as to when or if they become parents, that can be negotiated as to which of them will use contraception, and what method. But for those with multiple partners, the safest thing is to use your OWN contraception and not rely on the other person to be perfectly truthful about whether or not they are also doing so.

No one should take someone else's claim to be using birth control as permission to abdicate all responsibility for their own contraceptive use.

Also, there are women who, for whatever reason, are unable to use hormonal contraceptives, and may not be able to use IUDs, and don't wish to rely on barrier methods. In those cases, it would be very beneficial if their partner could use a contraceptive.
