The Male Pill

posted by on October 30 at 16:49 PM

And, no, I’m not talking about Viagra.

Men could soon be able to use a ‘male Pill’ that has no side effects…

Scientists have discovered a substance that can temporarily block the development of sperm without altering testosterone levels and without causing unwanted side effects. They hope human trials of a new contraceptive for men based on their discovery could begin within a few years.

I don't think I would ever trust anyone else but me to ensure that I do not get pregnant. What if they forget a few days? It's not their body they have to worry about.

There are actually two in various stages of clinical trials, and both are connected with studies and research at the UW.

No, it's not a joke.

But ... the main question is, how much do you trust us guys not to "forget" and knock you up anyways? It's not like we get pregnant ...

So, if you're married or living together and you both eventually want kids and all, it's a good thing. But you need to trust your partner. Same of course is/was always true for men when women "had" to do all the birth control.

Interesting side effects too, but not as much as those women have to deal with, from what I've read.

it's a nice option for when you're in a trusting relationship, the girl doesn't necessarily have to be the one possibly fucking up her body with chemicals in order to have sex without condoms.

i don't think there's such a thing as a pill with no side effects. they'll find out it causes brain cancer or something.

There has been a big drop in Real American births. This is just another liberal tactic to ensure that Real Americans are in the minority.

The biggest plus here is when both the guy and girl are on the pill. One gets to multiply the failure rates, taking something that fails in about 1 / 1000 couples to one out of a million.

And it's real. Read about it in nature.

How much do guys currently trust women not to "forget"? I agree with KY@3: nobody should trust another person with his or her reproductive fate. Such a pill would be a good thing not because it will relieve women of responsibility, but because it will give men a better way to protect themselves.

bingo Pox. There's been times when I would've given an eye tooth for a male pill...just as added protection from a girlfriend who might "accidentally" get pregnant as the ticking of the clock (or whatever) got louder.

It almost makes me wonder what a male "pill" could do to rape statistics? Would it make it easier for men to rape more women? just a thought...

"Would it make it easier for men to rape more women?"

I can only imagine how many men would become rapists if only they didn't have to deal with the inconvenience of buying condoms first...

Seriously though, was that a bad joke or is it actually the most brilliantly asinine thing I've ever heard? The logic is mind-boggling.

To chime in with a repeat of what others have already more or less said: A drug without side effects is like getting rich without effort. Sometimes it happens, but it's the exception that proves the rule.

no worries, just a bad joke. I can just smell the Christian activists fuming over a male pill. I'm sure that'll be one of the excuses.

Also: totally agree with WF. No side effects? If there are no side effects than tina turner doesn't wear a wig...

There has been a big drop in Real American births.

Really? Was there a study conducted across the different reservations recently?

....oh. You didn't mean REAL Americans, did you?

I wonder what the Pope and his ilk will think of this. They seem to be silent about viagra. Those pills for E.D. are used by older men who are likely not into starting a family. That would mean viagra is used for sex without procreation, A major no-no for some Catholics. Viagra is for the most part a recreational drug.

I'd use it in a relationship if it had no ill effects. The female pill jacks a woman's body up and it'd be nice if she didn't have to do that to herself.

The male pill.. he puts it in his shoe and it makes him limp.

Unfortunately, it's not an oral pill the way the female birth control pill is. It'd have to be by injection, implant, or hopefully maybe a patch.

The female pill has some side effects. They barely affect the majority of women and greatly affect others. I'm sure the same will be for the male pill.

Some side effects are more subtle than others. You'll notice nausea or headache, whereas you may not notice a general lack of energy or sexual desire.

Actually, I think priapism was one of the side effects of one of the two. Not sure how often, though. Interestingly, this would have been useful for a friend of mine who got a vasectomy cause he didn't want to have kids.

There are an awful lot of guys who live in fear of being "trapped" into 18 years of child support by a woman who's too flaky to take birth control, or who deliberately doesn't use it. For those guys, I would think this would be the answer. (I'm thinking specifically of one guy I know, who's trying to gradually break off with an increasingly clingy and importunate female. I would not put it past this particular female to use unethical and indecent methods to keep him tied to her.) I believe the women who would do such a thing are rare (after all, they're the ones who suffer the primary hardship of an unwanted pregnancy), but they do exist.

I believe BOTH partners should be equally responsible for birth control. Now, in a committed relationship where both are in agreement as to when or if they become parents, that can be negotiated as to which of them will use contraception, and what method. But for those with multiple partners, the safest thing is to use your OWN contraception and not rely on the other person to be perfectly truthful about whether or not they are also doing so.

No one should take someone else's claim to be using birth control as permission to abdicate all responsibility for their own contraceptive use.

Also, there are women who, for whatever reason, are unable to use hormonal contraceptives, and may not be able to use IUDs, and don't wish to rely on barrier methods. In those cases, it would be very beneficial if their partner could use a contraceptive.
