What great news. With the basement of Des Amis, the Cha Cha could start hosting shows and dance parties if they so chose. Plus, they'll be right next to Neumos, the Comet, and Havana.

I love Des Amis! That's a real bummer. Good for the Cha Cha, though.

Well crap...I guess we got what we asked for in cheering for the new "height restrictions" to create Urban density. I never considered that the resulting increase in property value would cause such drastic changes to neighborhood "institutions" like all the bars, restaurants on that block...bye bye, ChaCha, Bimbos, Bus Stop, Man-Ray, Kincora. And while I'm at it bye bye B&O Espresso. Hello Crappy new apartment buildings.

It's only a matter of time before the building that houses the Stranger is torn down to make way for condos with some oddly inappropriate but vaguely classy-sounding name like "Apnea" or "Wendigo" or somesuch. Hopefully the new offices won't be in an office park in Tukwila. (But if they are, at least by 2010 you'll be able to take light rail to work!)

ok, I was going to try to say a simple goodbye to Des Amis without commenting on the reasons - but really, the fact that anyone thought those new height allowances wouldn't have exactly this effect is frustrating.

Tell me, had it been spelled out to you that all the beloved spots in Cap Hill in low or old buildings would be likely targets for new construction would you have supported the increase in height restrictions?

BUS STOP! Tell us where will you move? We all want to know! I heart the Bus Stop.

Better idea:

Des Amis, stay.
Cha Cha, close.

Now, excuse me while a shed a solitary tear for the scenesters....

Hm, don't suppose there's any chance they could install a really long pass-through to La Puerta.

Posted by COMTE | October 25, 2006 2:58 PM

yes, in hindsight it was dumb not to realize the result would go beyond places like the old Safeway and QFC, old US Bank on Broadway/John, that lot next to The Egyptian (which were places that most everyone could care less about). Would I have voted differently? possibly...I mean, everything changes. It's not like things would stay the same forever. I also hear that there is talk about how the block with Bill's and Linda's might be targeted for condos as well. Unfortunatley Capitol Hill is getting a major gentrified make-over. It will be cleaner, more friendly....and boring as hell.

Posted by :: shawn :: | October 25, 2006 3:01 PM

So long as that pass through has a light, disinfecting mist, it'll be great.

I'd rather know what the future holds for Bimbo's. Because damn I love their food.

Bitch, bitch, bitch about the hipsters and their bars. Blah blah blah.

Look at this way, bitchsters: If the hipster bars all close, then the hipsters will be drinking... in your bars! Would you rather have hipster bars soaking up all the hipster business or packs of hipsters wandering from bar to bar in search of a drink?

If hipsters offend you so much—so much more than anything else—now you know what you gotta do to avoid 'em. Avoid their watering holes! Problem solved! Close their watering holes and they'll be coming after yours.

I hear that CC Attles is going away also.

I'm not one to gossip...... (ha) but word on the street is that Bimbos will be upstairs and the Cha Cha will be in the basement.... I lot of semi tight lipped people have known about this for WEEKS, for crying out loud, WEEKS Stranger, where have you been? (just teasing) Anyways, the owner of Des amis even told my friend the plan and gave him a tour of the basement, so it aint so secret anymore. Is anyone else watching Madonna on Oprah? What up with her bug eyes?

Or you can avoid all hipsters, bitchsters, yuppies, college kids, frat rats, rednecks, gangstas, hippies, preppies, white folks, black folks, yellow folks, red folks, etc., etc., etc. and just get drunk at home like me. The plus is that you can do it in your underpants. The minus is that you can still access all the infighting on the Slog (I kid because I love).

As of now, the Bus Stop hasn't found a new home. We looked at Des Amis this summer, but lacked the deep pockets to make it a reality. So, we're looking for a space, idealy around 1000 square feet. Any tips? Ideas?

What about that Internet space in the next block up? The one next to Rudy's? Does anyone need/use Internet cafes anymore? There's never anyone in there when I walk by...

Posted by Dan Savage | October 25, 2006 5:25 PM

I'm excited. This means I wont have to deal with all the annoying "too cool" hipsters smirking at us while singing sunday nights at the bus stop! Yay!

FYI: The Cha-Cha doesnt make you cool. YOU make you cool.

New Bus Stop: How about where Coffee Messiah use to be...and there's 3 bus stops within a block

Posted by :: shawn :: | October 25, 2006 6:08 PM

dude, what about where the jade pagoda used to be? bus stop RIGHT in front of it!

Posted by jenniferjane | October 25, 2006 8:59 PM

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, the Coffee Messiah space is too small. If someone could get the "smoke shop" next door to move out, we'd take both and move right in. As for the Jade Pagoda, removing the years of skank and the cost of remodeling would kill us. And I think they're planning some delicious new condos for that space...

Bus Stop lease renewed to November 2007. Then??

Posted by Toddy | October 25, 2006 9:22 PM

Fuck the Cha Cha. I hate that goddamn place. I'd love it if that place closed forever, though I'd be annoyed at all the unemployed coke dealers I'd see on the street.

Posted by Gitai | October 25, 2006 9:28 PM

Okay, what the fuck do I do now.

I decided to move to NY because I heard the Cha Cha was closing. And I move this Sunday. And I can't get out of it.

Guess I'll just come back when she's good and ready!

Can we connect it underground to Havana and Neumos !??!?!

Amy/Jason - got shovels?

Posted by Edward Bender | October 25, 2006 10:10 PM

unemployed coke dealers = contradiction in terms

Posted by 11x11 | October 26, 2006 12:25 AM

I think it'd be better if the Cha Cha moved into oblivion.

Posted by Dex | October 26, 2006 3:55 AM

By the way, flamingbanjo pointed out the sign of the proverbial apocalypse in #4: the ultimate sign that Seattle is done for and it's time to move away will be when the Stranger's forced from their location, and from Capitol Hill, due to gentrification of their building.

Posted by Gomez | October 26, 2006 10:37 AM

And through all this:

Turf Restaurant on 2nd and Pike is still alive.

*LAUGHS* Life is just *weird*, you know?

I wonder what that means for BootyLIB? They've been bringing the heat to the Des Amis basement every 4th Saturday for months now. They brought DJ Godfather last Saturday and Bmore's Tittsworth is on the bill next month.

Love the'll be interesting to see what the Cha does to it.
