Slog - Comments on The Cha Cha, Like My Heart, Will Go On

Thanks to Slog tipster Colonel Keith Bacon, I just received word of the new liquor license application submitted by the owners of the Cha Cha Lounge, who appear to be fleeing their soon-to-be-condofied block on Pine Street for the sunnier-for-now pastures of Pike St. According to the application notice, the Cha Cha will be moving in to the space currently occupied by the Des Amis Lounge at 1013 E Pike St. (It's the place between the Wildrose and Cafe Vita on the south side of the street.) I just called Des Amis and got voice mail, but according to their...

Well crap...I guess we got what we asked for in cheering for the new "height restrictions" to create Urban density. I never considered that the resulting increase in property value would cause such drastic changes to neighborhood "institutions" like all the bars, restaurants on that block...bye bye, ChaCha, Bimbos, Bus Stop, Man-Ray, Kincora. And while I'm at it bye bye B&O Espresso. Hello Crappy new apartment buildings.

It's only a matter of time before the building that houses the Stranger is torn down to make way for condos with some oddly inappropriate but vaguely classy-sounding name like "Apnea" or "Wendigo" or somesuch. Hopefully the new offices won't be in an office park in Tukwila. (But if they are, at least by 2010 you'll be able to take light rail to work!)

ok, I was going to try to say a simple goodbye to Des Amis without commenting on the reasons - but really, the fact that anyone thought those new height allowances wouldn't have exactly this effect is frustrating.

Tell me, had it been spelled out to you that all the beloved spots in Cap Hill in low or old buildings would be likely targets for new construction would you have supported the increase in height restrictions?

yes, in hindsight it was dumb not to realize the result would go beyond places like the old Safeway and QFC, old US Bank on Broadway/John, that lot next to The Egyptian (which were places that most everyone could care less about). Would I have voted differently? possibly...I mean, everything changes. It's not like things would stay the same forever. I also hear that there is talk about how the block with Bill's and Linda's might be targeted for condos as well. Unfortunatley Capitol Hill is getting a major gentrified make-over. It will be cleaner, more friendly....and boring as hell.

Bitch, bitch, bitch about the hipsters and their bars. Blah blah blah.

Look at this way, bitchsters: If the hipster bars all close, then the hipsters will be drinking... in your bars! Would you rather have hipster bars soaking up all the hipster business or packs of hipsters wandering from bar to bar in search of a drink?

If hipsters offend you so much—so much more than anything else—now you know what you gotta do to avoid 'em. Avoid their watering holes! Problem solved! Close their watering holes and they'll be coming after yours.

I lot of semi tight lipped people have known about this for WEEKS, for crying out loud, WEEKS Stranger, where have you been? (just teasing) Anyways, the owner of Des amis even told my friend the plan and gave him a tour of the basement, so it aint so secret anymore. Is anyone else watching Madonna on Oprah? What up with her bug eyes?

The plus is that you can do it in your underpants. The minus is that you can still access all the infighting on the Slog (I kid because I love).

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, the Coffee Messiah space is too small. If someone could get the "smoke shop" next door to move out, we'd take both and move right in. As for the Jade Pagoda, removing the years of skank and the cost of remodeling would kill us. And I think they're planning some delicious new condos for that space...
