That Damn Gap Ad

I know I’m not alone in finding the new Gap ad campaign utterly irritating (sorry, I can’t bring myself to link to it, go to Youtube if you must), but I think Danny Miller at Huffington Post has expressed our collective dismay most pointedly.

what's worse is king5's coverage of said ad as a news item.

all I can say, although I like the dancing, is that I worry that this promotes anorexia, and that's NOT a good thing.

I almost spit up my milk chocolate on the last line:

"And now, screen legend Greta Garbo explains why she's going 'muy loca' for Taco Bell's new triple-decker burrito..."

Greta, drop the chalupa!!

Jack forgot to mention that our educational system is in shambles. Bloggers are barely able to spell anymore and it's near impossible to find Morth Korea on a map.

Jack,

As undeniably serious/terminal as the situation is in the US today, we can't give up the things that make us laugh. If we do, then the Republicans and terrorists have won.

Redlawn, that was awesome.

I like those ads. Oh well.

I absolutely love those commercials and think they are so creative and edited brilliantly. What an amusing contrast!

I'm with you jack. The Stranger does seem to be sliding toward the bellevue mode of life.

When watching tv, the times I usually get an authentic chuckle are when the commercials come on, we turn down the volume, and somebody says something amusing.

You should see my roommate go absolutely apeshit when those ads come on. I mean, exploiting AC/DC like that - their poor guitarist is still in grammar school for chrissake!

Really though - the band gets paid (hopefully they own the publishing rights to that song), Audrey’s children’s charity gets a hunk of change, and everyone gets annoyed. Win, win, win.

yeah, and I'm sure if Dylan were dead and showed up in a Victoria's Secret ad everyone would be crying mercy.

also, I liked this comment...

"It's a sad day when they have to raise the dead to find class."

No one remembers the Fred Astaire Dirt Devil ads from a few years ago? Nothing new here.

The Fred Astaire ads are mentioned in the linked article, and apparently there was a huge furor over them (I didn't have a tv then and don't remember them).

I havppen to love the movie Funny Face, and at first I thought these ads were very cute - just like I thought the Gap ads using models singing "Dress You Up" were cute so many years ago. Of course, after about 10,000,000 viewings, they're not as cute. I agree that Audrey Hepburn must be spinning in her grave over the use of her image in a Gap commercial. It's one thing to sell out, and another to have someone sell out for you. But I'm actually more disturbed to see Slash selling VWs than Audrey dancing to AC/DC for Gap.
