Yeah, I'm in denial over this. Even before I got involved myself (as with Sarah R., Steve Wells gave me faith-based performance slots that forced me to produce shows), I loved Re-bar. I met my first Seattle boyfriend there (at one of Carla's legendary, line-around-the-block Thursday night disco parties), and have seen some of the most amazing theater of my life there. (Greatest hit: Part 2 of Dina Martina's two-night greatest hits extravaganza, Come Back to the Re-bar, Dina Martina, Dina Martina, featuring Phoebe's goiter, Hobo Dina "in the jhetto", and the awe-inspiring "All Tomorrow's Parties"-into-"Year of the Cat" transformation medley.)

Sob.

I had my 21st birthday at the Re-Bar, which happened to be on a Thursday (MC Queen Lucky's night of course.) Good times, good times...

Ever since I lived in Boston a block away from the site of the old Cocoanut Grove nightclub, where 492 people died in eleven minutes in a famous fire back in 1942, and read a couple of books on the subject, I've scanned every dark club I've ever been in for sprinklers. I know it's expensive but it's nothing compared to dead people stacked on the sidewalk like cordwood. I hope someone can make a new Re-Bar work, with sprinklers.

Sad. Could the Stranger please do a story about all what bars are/are not closing and why. Rumors on the hill abound--Showbox? Cha Cha? Thumpers? The Elite? Whats true? What isn't? And who the hell is buying all this land? Where the hell are all those fucking yuppies going to go when they tear down everyplace thats fun?

OMG! I'm in total denial. This place CANNOT close...it would be a complete and utter abomination. For at least the last 3+ years I have spent most of my Sunday nights dancing my ass off at FLAMMABLE, brilliantly orchestrated by DJ Brian Lyons and more recently DJ Wesley Holmes. The incredible energy they and the guest DJ's bring to that space is unmatched. I have experienced some of the most amazing DJ talent there and made lasting friendships with some of the eclectic "regulars" I've met there, and whom the staff all greet with a smile week after week!
I really hope this place survives!

Steve Wells is a giant among men, and his Re-bar was a very special place. He hosted both my primary and general election parties for my political fiasco (I mean candidacy) in 2001, booked me to read poetry there, and created a warm, welcoming environment with an aura of true, down-and-dirty urban excitement. Recently I have run into Steve at the Mars Bar on Eastlake, which shares the old Re-bar's unpretentious vibe. Haven't seen him yet at the Bus Stop, which resurrects the madcap, sexy, isthisbargayorstraight spirit, graffitoed red-black color scheme and drunk lighting.

Extropia was one of the best shows I've seen in Seattle. I loved it.

Perhaps they will get new bartenders with the sale. Lets hope so - because they are one bitchy crew right now.

Thank you, Steve, for giving us Re-bar. It made me so happy, as did meeting you.

Re-bar is a precious Seattle gem. If we lose this treasure, local arts will suffer. Re-bar has boldly given us brilliant art exhibits, hilarious theater, unique live music, incredible dj talent, creative monthly events, but most importantly, a strong sense of community. I hope we can use Re-bar to connect the arts firmly to the supposed Emerald City. Let's get busy.
