I just want to thank you for "In udder news." It legitimately brightened my morning.

Does it seem to anyone else that the US soldier death count has become like the morning sports report or the weekend box office figures? The casual manner of reporting the number of soldiers and civilians killed is truly appalling, almost as appalling as the fact that the American media never shows the photos or videos in which the rest of the world sees the horrors of this war.

'In other news, here are the number of casualties in the daily suicide bombings. Film at 11!'

I'm not saying this to be mean or snarky, but it has become so boring and routine that the headlines all blend together. Why is that?

Bush and the Republicans don't care about the death count; this is their Christian Culture of Life®, after all. Anyone who advocates ending the occupation is shouted down as a traitor and a coward. If they don't care and the military doesn't care, should we?

The constant dumbing down of education and information so that no one's feelings get hurt is and will continue to be our downfall. Just look at Red America and our President.

Andrew, a few of us are old enough to remember similar "body count" recaps from our childhoods. Walter Cronkite used to start every evening news broadcast during the Viet Nam war with a "number killed/wounded" tally, along with the cumulative totals for the year.

Profound in its simplicity and lack of graphic detail, the nightly count was one of the small details that eventually turned many Americans against supporting the war.

Actually, I heard part of the debate on KUOW, and while the Libertarian may have been the winner, the reality is that a vote for him is a vote to help King George keep control of the Senate.

But it was interesting, nonetheless.

I listened to the debate on the radio too. But I disagree with Will in Seattle. Regardless of what the PI says, Libertarians generally peel votes off the Republican more than the Democrat. Government-loving liberals don't generally support the economic liberty that the Libertarian party represents. Libertarians want to slash the bureaucratic regulation of business, and create charitable (rather than government) welfare. In addition to that, they ARE generally "anti-war, pro-gay-marriage, pro-immigration and pro-marijuana-legalization." It's a party of principle.

And really, the Republicans have been screwing up so much lately, I am pretty confident that the Dems are going to take back at least the House.

McGavick was really toeing the party line last night. He sounded like a fool. I can't believe that there are grown-ups in politics that actually believe that a border fence is a good idea. It's the most stupid thing.

I was in the 10% or so that was against the Iraq war before it started, so it's hard to not be bitter.
We were denounced and denigrated from every angle, Repubs, Democrats and yes, even the Stranger. Dan Savage and Christopher Frizzelle both wrote specious pro-war pieces that uncurled my hair -it was a real life example of the Cassandra Syndrome.

Next to no one has learned anything from history even as recent as the Vietnam war, and we were in Vietnam for 12 years, for Chrissakes. As a society, we seem doomed to constantly repeat our mistakes. Even today, everyone is asking "why do they hate us?" all over again.

Oh! The bovinity!

Anyone hear about the cows all over I-5 and the Hewitt Avenue Tressel near Everett last night and very early this AM? That must've been funny/freaky to drivers.

Is it really surprising that students perform better when they spend all their time thinking they're not good enough?

Not at all Noink. Good observation. The "touchy-feely" education crap removes the challenge and motivation from students, i.e. the best revenge is success.

#5... this is why 3rd parties will never have any real foothold in our governments. The Dems use the fear of the Republicans gaining or holding control to scare people off from voting for a 3rd party candidate.
