Monday Night Madonnaisance

posted by on October 16 at 18:39 PM

This evening, while working on the forthcoming Last Days, I had dinner at Ballet on Pike then moved to the Vivace Roasteria on Denny.

At both places, the air was filled with the same sound: Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection.

I’m not complaining, just noticing.

(And while I’m excercising my noticing bone, let me say that Vivace makes the greatest coffee in the entire fucking world and Madonna’s “Like a Prayer”—both the music video and the original LP version of the song—is one of greatest works of art of the 20th century.)

Argue with me if you must. (And if you’ve got a good Hot Tip about something that happened yesterday—Sunday October 15—let me know.)

No, the greatest espresso in the world is made in Florence, as is the greatest gelato. It's simply impossible to believe that you are enjoying the world's best cup of coffee without hearing *ciao* at least a dozen times from the lips of hot italian boys.
Vivace is wonderfully obsessive though. It just needs some authentic *ciao* and a room with a view, del Duomo that is, but that is implied by the reference.

As for yestarday's news, we were given a new saint. Rafael GuĂzar y Valencia, cannonized as bishop to the poor, but in reality canonized because of his status as bishop of Mexico City during th Cristero wars. In other words he was cannonized as a symbol of the resistance to secularization. Incidentally, present at St Peters was a nephew of the new saint - Marciel Maciel, the founder of he uber-recht Legionnaires of Christ, recently disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse.

Oh yeah! The Seagulls won! Thanks!

P.S. The name "Holier than cow" is funnier than shit.

P.P.S. Thanks as well to the intelligent and discriminating Kinaidos.

Like A Prayer is a goddam great motherf-ing song. That pause in the song is one of the great pauses in music. In the history of music. In the entire history of sound. Or non sound.

Madonna, for all her trashiness, Malawi baby adopting, Guy Ritchie loving, Gay boy voguing, hairy armpit Penthouse sporting, bullet bra wearing, coke bottle deep throating, is the best.

Hands down.

Move along bitches.

Heard over the metro radio on the bus that there was "police activity" at Bellevue and Pine blocking the intersection a little after 7 PM as arrests were made.

I love Madonna. As far as I'm concerned she can do no wrong.

Express Yourself speaks to me more so than Like a Prayer, probably because I was raised Protestant rather than Catholic.

Ray of Light with William Orbit is one of the best records ever made.

BTW, David, are you ever going to do Showgirls again? Somehow I missed it.

I will readily agree that Vivace serves the best Seattle-style espresso drinks in Seattle, though I would argue that factoring in the hour of day and day of week, the sidewalk bar at 321 broadway on average is better than the Denny store.

But if you want Italy-style espresso drinks, you need to walk your lazy faggot ass down off of Capitol Hill to 2nd and Virginia and order the goods at the Café D'arte store there.

Erf. Second and stewart, not virgina. I always get those two bitches confused. So lest I steer you wrong, try a block up and down 2nd, when you go searching for it.

David, You are correct. As a straight, but closeted, Madonna fan, I consider "Like a Prayer" to be one of her best songs.

Vivace is indeed the best coffee ever, and Like a Prayer is indeed Madonna's best song and one of the better things to ever happen to pop music.

I'm glad we agree. Carry on.

Just to add a little fuel to your Madonna-fire. I was in the Broadway Red Light on Monday night and they were also playing the Immaculate Collection. Must have been something in the air?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for publicly stating what I've been preaching for nearly a decade. Vivace IS the best coffee in this city. Maybe there is more "ciao" in other cups in this city, but for pure caffeinated bliss it's Vivace hands down.

I remember the day I was converted at the sidewalk stand next to Casa del Rey soon after moving into the city. My buddy planted us in the line stretching down the sidewalk and wouldn't hear me when I protested that the coffee shack across the street had no line (how can that place stay open?). However; after that first cup of perfection it came clear to me why we were all there standing in that line in the rain.

I moved off the hill about 5 years ago and now have to make pilgrimages to Broadway for my fix. The staff still remembers me, my drink, and the tidbits of my life that I've shared...

This all adds up to- I LOVE YOU VIVACE!!!

fellow Vivace devotees:

Note that Espresso Vivace's Roasteria (at Broadway & Denny) will be coming down once Sound Transit begins construction on the Link's Capitol Hill station. I haven't yet heard if Vivace have found a replacement location. I heard that a "local coffee shop" is going to be in the Brix Condos (old Safeway site on Broadway); anyone know which one?

Also note that Vivace opened a new location across the street from REI a few months ago.
