Slog - Comments on Monday Morning Sports Report

Well that was embarrassing. 31-13. At home. On Steve Hutchinson's return. Ouch. And then there's the injury added to insult: Matt Hasselbeck's sprained right knee. It's probably safe to say that the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC won't be coming through Qwest Field this year. Moving on: It hurts to type this, but congratulations Wazzu on beating #16 Oregon. Don't let it, or your four votes in the AP poll, go to your head. As for the Dawgs: Close, but not close enough. And finally, 1-1 in the World Series after Detroit won game two. Kenny Rogers...

I hope I'm wrong but I believe that Hasselbeck's knee is much worse than a sprain. It's usually bad news when a team has to wait for the tests on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. It usually means they're getting a second opinion. If he's out for the season, the team won't make the playoffs. It has nothing to do with the Super Bowl jinx. It has to do with the team's management not bringing in a capable backup.

Where's Trent Dilfer?

Shegull fans:

Man, I know the feeling: Bears management NEVER brought in decent backup quarterbacks, so each of the last three years when Rex got hurt, we sucked--Orton's wins last season notwithstanding. Now we have a capable backup, and Rex is healthy. Magical reasoning suggests a connection.

Right here, Mike.
Now I've modified my expectations. I'm looking for a "Tiger Sweep". That's where you lose the first game to give your oponents a ray of hope, then snuff it out by taking all the rest of the games in a row. It hurts worse that way. Derek Jeter can explain it to you, Mike.

Trent Dilfer is 96 years old. He probably has arthritis by now. Why the hell would anybody want to bring an old man back? Why are Seahawks fan enamored with useless old men? Face it, the season is over, no running game and Seneca Wallace will be ok, but he damn sure is no Tom Brady. He is as capable as any backup quarterback should be, but he is no miracle worker. One thing they can do is adjust the offense. Seneca is a running quarterback with a so-so arm, they can not run the same offense they had for Matt.

Sehawks get a wild card and out in the first round. GO HAWKS!!

Go Cards. Didnt you love it in game 1 when they decided to pitch to Pujols?

I predicted here that the Cards would win the first game and lose the next four.

But the next time Rogers pitches, don't look at his hand--look at his cap. He's the only Tiger who wears a BP cap, which has a black underbrim, instead of the regular "official" cap, which has a grey one.

The Hawks are now -21 on points for the season. Do I hear eight and eight?

Seme: yes, I loved it, but knowing Leyland (and every other manager in baseball), that just reminded everyone why NOT to pitch to him. Pujols won't see another pitch unless it's bases loaded no outs.

Eric: that's a bold statement with the Series coming back to The Lou and Carpenter (2005 Cy Young) and Suppan (NLCS MVP) going in game 3 & 4. I guess we'll see...

I went to the Seahawks game yesterday. My prediction for the next game I go to is fewer shots of tequila pre-game and one or two fewer beers both pre and in-game. I knew we were losing, but I had to look at the stats this morning to see exactly what else happened. Hasselbeck injured? Chester Taylor 90-yard td run? Jeesh. World Series, Sunday Night Football? Fell asleep on the living room floor with my game clothes on.

Seme-I was kidding about Dilfer. But I looked him up and noticed that he's backing up Alex Smith in San Fran. He still would have been better than Wallace, who's not very capable--adjusted (simplified) offense or not. Why the Seahawks have a running QB as a backup in a complex West Coast system is beyong me. They'd be lucky to win two games with Wallace.

The fact that Rogers threw 7 shutout innings AFTER cleaning off whatever that stuff was tells me that a) he probably wasn't cheating and it was just some random crap and b) even if he was cheating, he didn't gain that much of an advantage.

Also, Seahawks need to step up because this season's circling the drain. Seneca Wallace better dial up his sense memory of his Iowa State days, when he played like Michael Vick on LSD, because him running like mad will help the Hawks more than Wallace trying to imitate Hasselbeck and failing miserably.

Also, LOL to the Cougs getting page C6 coverage from all the local media despite their huge upset over top 25 Oregon. Even KOMO radio could barely mention it during their 5:10 sports recap. I don't care how many recovering alcoholics ERRRRRR alumni they have living here: in Seattle, UW will always come first and WSU will always come 2nd.

Put the following together and you'll
always have poorly played game:

The Seahawk line is still flat-footed.

The Seahawk receivers wait for the ball instead of going after it.

The Seahawk backup quarterback, Seneca Wallace, obviously has not been given enough touches.

Fundamentally, these are coaching errors and not entirely player errors. The fact that Wallace has seen so few touches is a good example of exceedingly poor team management.

Oh, and forget about Alexander coming to the rescue...he can't or won't do anything (except take a beating) until that O-line improves their
play.

Good points Bosco, but the fact remains that HE IS a running quarterback and you have to try to get that line adjusted to those needs. The O line is just not as dynamic as it needs to be. I disagree with you that Dilfer would have been better, the old man would have been sacked 24 times and would have lost his memory like that dude they just found in Denver.

Did anybody cath the Husky game? Wow!! The Pac 10 is one tough conference. Who would have thought that hippie school in Berkeley would be a top 10 power house in the nation.

Cards are not going to lose 4 in a row, sorry FNARF. Too much heart and too much power for that to happen. I am bummed that I wont see Pujols hit again, they are going to walk him now until the end of time, bases loaded be damned.
