This is somewhat sad that kindergarten rules need to be spelled out for 20 year olds. I guess necessary though.
In a way, faculty should show just as much respect. When you're approaching middle age I get the feeling that some of the respect I showed my elders could have been reciprocated better.

Charles, some departments are dysfunctional and have faculty who neglect both basic courtesy and their obligations to students, but they are, by far, the minority. Universities couldn't function if your assessment were true.
