“It defies belief that this president and his administration could continue to find new unexplored political gutters into which they could wallow.”

posted by on October 6 at 13:34 PM

Another stirring commentary from MSNBC’s Keith “Have you no sense of decency, sir?” Olbermann. Watch it.

Yesterday at a fundraiser for an Arizona congressman, Mr. Bush claimed, quote, “177 of the opposition party said, `You know, we don’t think we ought to be listening to the conversations of terrorists.’”

The hell they did.

One hundred seventy-seven Democrats opposed the president’s seizure of another part of the Constitution.

Not even the White House press office could actually name a single Democrat who had ever said the government shouldn’t be listening to the conversations of terrorists.

President Bush hears what he wants.

Tuesday, at another fundraiser in California, he had said, “Democrats take a law enforcement approach to terrorism. That means America will wait until we’re attacked again before we respond.”

Mr. Bush fabricated that, too.

And evidently he has begun to fancy himself as a mind reader.

“If you listen closely to some of the leaders of the Democratic Party,” the president said at another fundraiser Monday in Nevada, “it sounds like they think the best way to protect the American people is wait until we’re attacked again.”

The president doesn’t just hear what he wants.

He hears things that only he can hear.

It defies belief that this president and his administration could continue to find new unexplored political gutters into which they could wallow.

Yet they do.

It is startling enough that such things could be said out loud by any president of this nation.

Rhetorically, it is about an inch short of Mr. Bush accusing Democratic leaders, Democrats, the majority of Americans who disagree with his policies of treason. […]

No critic, no commentator, no reluctant Republican in the Senate has ever said anything that any responsible person could even have exaggerated into the slander you spoke in Nevada on Monday night, nor the slander you spoke in California on Tuesday, nor the slander you spoke in Arizona on Wednesday … nor whatever is next.

You have dishonored your party, sir; you have dishonored your supporters; you have dishonored yourself.

But tonight the stark question we must face is why?

Why has the ferocity of your venom against the Democrats now exceeded the ferocity of your venom against the terrorists?

Why have you chosen to go down in history as the president who made things up?

In less than one month you have gone from a flawed call to unity to this clarion call to hatred of Americans, by Americans.

If this is not simply the most shameless example of the rhetoric of political hackery, then it would have to be the cry of a leader crumbling under the weight of his own lies. […]

But if we know one thing for certain about Mr. Bush, it is this: This president in his bullying of the Senate last month and in his slandering of the Democrats this month has shown us that he believes whoever the enemies are, they are hiding themselves inside a dangerous cloak called the Constitution of the United States of America.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce our fearless leader, HRH George W Bush!

THE PREZNIT: Thank yew, Thank yew. It’s such a pleasure to be here in – what hippie hellhole is this, again? Oh right, See-attel. Yes, the past six years have been a glorious era of peace and prosperity for all, but I hear yew SAD afflicted, fish-wrapping communists still ain’t happy. Well, ya cain’t please everyone so Gawd told me to head on over here and let yew know that yewr gonna feel like yew just landed on a bicycle without a seat after the next blessed two years of mah regime.

(Thunderous applause. Bush raises hands and cues flesh colored lights to address the Almighty).

Sweet Lord Jebus, please grant me the power to make our good Christian, Republican voters ignore this tidal wave of bad PR that threatens to flood the nation like so much Hurricane Katrina.

Please help them look past the treasonous lies, criminal incompetence, duplicitous cover-ups, moral bankruptcy, venal greed and open hypocrisy. Never let them realize that a third world terrorist group like Hamas is far more capable of rebuilding the ravaged lands of the Middle East and Louisiana than the Army Corps of Engineers and your holy foot soldiers of Halliburton Contractors.

Grant me the poweratude to replace fair minded federal judges and legislators with goose stepping right wingers who will look Katie Couric and the American public in the eye and tell them with a straight face that not only do I have the power to shred the 1st, 4th and 8th Amendments to the Constimatuition, but I actually time traveled back to 1776 and wrote the damn thing myself.

Also endower me with the fortoritude to tell the International Criminal Court to screw off, just in case it really is a war crime to give yewrself retroactive immunity from war crimes.

In closing, dear Lord, I look forward to following yewr wishes and ensuring that every Amurikan family has cat food and candles, since that’s whut they’ll be living on after the multi-trillion dollar IOU to the Chinese comes due.

If Yew have any objection to any of these plans, then give me no sign.

Amen. And Gawd Bless Amurika!

Right on, Olbermann. That was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV, definitely the best news segment. You kick ass. Thanks for the transcript.

Empowering to hear truth and journalism with integrity.

Olbermann's been layin' it down like that quite a bit recently.

Let's just hope that he doesn't get disappeared to Gitmo...

I don't watch much TV, but I've been really pleased to read Olbermann's recent rants and watch them on YouTube. He's expressing the deeply felt disgust and anger that I feel, and I cross my fingers that someone outside of our little echo chamber is paying attention. As far as I'm concerned, a professional solipsist like Bill O'Reilly isn't fit to clean Olbermann's towels. But I fear that Olbermann is still largely unknown while O'Reilly and his diseased ilk reach millions of viewers every night.

Olbermann?? Isn't he just some snarky sports guy with a cheesy mustache on ESPN? Why would he be doing political commentary on SportsCenter?

(Yes, I know the real story. Watch your back, Keith...)

If you're a liberal with Tivo, you are failing in your civic duty if you don't have a season pass. That goes double for you Neilsen families...

I think Olbermann's got a bigger audience than O'Really? now. If not, it's close. A lot closer than you'd think from the amount of media attention they get (in this media-covering-media-covering-media hall of mirrors we live in). O'Really's losing viewers in droves, due not only to the general collapse of the kook-right worldview, but to his own well-publicized TKOs suffered at the hands of reality.
