Life Halloweekend Reflections

onI, for one, was disappointed by the lack of interesting costumes wandering around Seattle this weekend. I think what most Halloween-goers are lacking is ingenuity — you get one night a year to dress up guilt-free as anything you want in the world, why stick to the limited creativity of heavily-focus-grouped and suitable-for-mainstream-marketing store-bought costumes? Even people who make their own outfits usually fall into several safe and identifiable categories (though definite props to the Sexy Bee I spotted mingling with the Sexy Pirates, Cowgirls, etc., in Pioneer Square last night; anyone proudly dressing to attract insect fetishists has spunk in my book), dressing as characters or icons thought up by someone else. I know, I’m a snob when it comes to Halloween (same goes for pies and parmesan cheese) but the only originally-generated costume I saw all weekend was the girl dressed as Homeschool Mom with a frumpy lace-lined flowered dress, cat earrings and a crucifix necklace.
A spot of light in the bleak landscape of Halloween creativity: erotic pumpkin carving contest at Babeland.
I love the Cumkin. You can submit, too, until Tuesday.
UPDATE: For the official record, Dave Schmader knows what’s up.

I guess you were just at the wrong parties. I saw a ton of great ones, including a sexy pork chop and a giant squid. I think in general Seattleites are really good at coming up with great costumes (compared to Boston, anyway, which is the only other city with which I have much experience).
LOL sexy pork chop
Agreed. I was at an epic party this weekend with over 200 others and EVERYONE was dressed up.
my DIY robot costume was teh cool. but you can't really write a post saying people around here don't know how to *do* halloween while not telling us what you dressed up as (or upload a picture showing us all how it's done).
just sayin'.
You'd be REALLY disappointed in other cities then, save for the major metropoli (SF, NYC). Few people dress up in other cities. I was actually surprised at the number of people I saw dressed up this weekend.
Also, it was the weekend of Halloween, not the actual holiday itself. That may have deterred potential dressers-up who aren't used to this observance-weekend crap.
I think there are plenty of great costumes around, you just have to go to the right parties with the right geeky crowds.
What were you for Halloween? A whiny writer?
i was in atlanta this weekend, and i was very impressed. the best was michael jackson from Thriller, including about 15 zombies. they paid attention to detail like woah.
Levislade and GFISH,
You're probably right... I live in Pioneer Square, the epicenter of the dispiriting sexy sexy costume crowd.
I can never come up with anything interesting. I'm kinda retarded creatively.
I was at a party Sat with a guy as Kim Jong Il. Not bad...
Sarah went as Mark Foley's page. It was a killer costume.
They're saving all their cool costumes for Trolloween on Tuesday with the Troll.
I'll be green hatting there.
Homeschool Mom = Teh genius
I once read about someone who went as Passed-Out Guy At A Party, and walked around with a Sharpie and had people draw penii, moustaches, "I'm A Pussy", etc. on his body.
I went as a Christmas tree, complete with gold garland, shiny red ornaments AND battery-powered lights. The damn thing was made out of chicken wire, green fabric and that fake-evergreen garland and it was pretty hard to maneuver once I got my drink on (and had to come off when I had to pee...no fun!).
It was quite the hit though and now I'll leave it in the corner of my apartment for a couple months and not have to worry about xmas decorations...
my fiance went as juan, the guy with the sign and the agenda on 6th and pine who preaches his message to anyone who listens. it was brilliant and really well received.
