Why? What's the point on ripping on the Seahawks? They're the only pro sport that's bringing some civic pride to the city. If you want to come up with degrading names for our sports teams, give it to the horribly-run Bill Bavasi Mariners, or the soon-to-be-gone Sonics.

It wouldn't be so uncool if the Stranger got behind the Seahawks.

Yeah Dan - why don't you come up with something for those losers you love to watch - the Mariners. (How 'bout the Maryners?) At least the Hawks can play.

I've been very clear: I don't love the M's. I like going to the games for the beer, the boys, and the time I get to spend with my family. Love the M's? Hardly.

Now the Cubs...

I still like calling them the seahags.

OK Dan, so you like to spend quality time with your family watching the Maryners. Great. Still no reason to dish the Hawks. Especially when they're winning.

If it's anything like last year, they might as well be the SuperSonias. Actually, even if they win it all, I still like the name - SUPERSONIAS!!

whatever, so women would suck at football, no surprise there. i think the boobs would definitely be the number one hindrance, but there would also be many others. "she" instead of "sea" is totally uncreative, and it is so overdone to give male athletes feminine characteristics if you are trying to say they suck, eg "throws like a girl." "shehawks" is so fratboy, and in case you didn't know, that's a bad thing. seagulls is way better and should stay the name. so, no, the new name is not noted.

hm... i thought we were calling them fags, not women.

Women don't necessarily suck at football. My mom played (tackle) football at St Mary's, then the sister college of Notre Dame, back in the 60s. Their team got shut down after they played a particularly hard-fought game in the Notre Dame stadium-- the men's team and the coaches thought women shouldn't be playing such a violent sport, bad for their femininity, etc etc. But when we were growing up, my mom was always much better at football than my dad (and he played in college, as well).

Also, Seagulls is funnier than Shehawks imo.

Let's give a shout out to Paul Allen! He saved the Seahawks from being shipped down state.

He's also done some other incredible things for this City. It would be nice for the Stranger to "recognize" every once in a while.

Here's a shout out! Billy Joel wrote a good song 25 yrs ago, ALLENTOWN.
Proper names and products have been changed to avoid a Conflict of Interest. Strike up the band!

Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the stadiums down
Out in Mercer Isle they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends out on Ocean Shores
Met our mothers in the Naturalmetro*
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we're living here in Allentown
But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to stay
Well we're waiting here in Allentown
For the Washington we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Software and Planes
And Biotechnology
And we're waiting here in Allentown
But they've taken all the trees from the ground
And the union people crawled away
Every child has a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw a Starbuck's flag in our place
Well I'm living here in Allentown
And it's hard to keep a good man down
But I won't be getting very hard to stay
And we're living here in Allentown

*that's my favorite change - gotta keep current!

Huzzah for yet more sexism from Dan Savage

Seachicken/Sexist - why don't you find a website that talks about female genital mutilation and find a sexist battle really worth fighting.

I find you and your insufferable political correctness boring.

Shehawks is funny, my first mental image was of drag queens playing football.

You should look to The Who when deciding how to treat Seattle sports:

We forsake you
Gonna rape you
Lets forget you better still

"Shehawks," in the context of male competition sports, most definitely implies the feminine with derogatory intention.

Lame.

I'm with David @ 19, Dan. NEvermind the sexist angle - it's lazy, 8th grade humor... c'mon, there's better things to call 'em! We can find something truly original if we work hard enough.

#10 Dan -

If there were ever a fag cheering squad, you know it wouldn't take half a second to declare them the"Seecocks."

Maybe ex-cheerleader George W. Bush could get a gig as squad choreographer after he's impeached.

I like "Seagulls" a lot better, it's cheeky. "Shehawks", I have to agree is a bit fratish.

There's a whole world of difference between the two terms.

Use Seagulls to pretend you're oblivious to football. It patronizes the sports fans, especially if any of them are dim enough to correct you.

Use Shehawks to indicate that you do indeed have some awareness of football, and that you care enough about the team to insult them when they do poorly.

Aside to Bosco:

You know, the last thing I feel when I watch, listen to, and drink next to Seahawks fans during a winning season is "civic pride."

It's insulting to men to liken them to women, is it? Come on, Dan -- this is obvious sexist bullshit. And it's lazy and stupid.

Dan, I love you, but you fucked up this time.

Even so, Dan's unintentional insult to women is nothing compared to the insult of the public paying $300 million dollars for Qwest field, a field for only men to play on. We need a Title IX for publicly financed sports areans.

Yeah, sorry, you won't hear this shit from me often, but: it is sexist. It's like using the word 'gay' as a derogatory term.

Plus, 'Seagulls' is way funnier, due to the aforementioned oblivious factor.
