Viaduct: Now with techno music

Posted by on September 26 at 13:49 PM

Who can say no to the future when set to a snazzy soundtrack? Washington State Department of Transportation spent $300,000 dollars on this new high-tech computer animation of the two possibilities for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Guaranteed to impress your grandmother.

Omigawd, now the tunnel option is even MORE depressing. Oh, please, please, please do not let that happen. Even IF they were going to pipe AWESOME GarageBand electronic muzak straight into the tunnel, it would still be unbearable.

NNNOOOOO TTTTUUUNNNNNNNNNEEELL! No! No giant concrete trench along the waterfront, fer fuck's sake! You think it's hard to get down there now? LOOK AT THAT THING!

Pray to whatever gods you believe in that we get the surface option.

Mmmmm......transit porn.........

Surely, if they paid $300K for this, the ultimate cost of the tunnel itself will be $300 billion?

Slow news day - or are you guys really that far behind the times? These have been out for about 3 weeks now...

Do we get to read about the Kingdome being imploded tomorrow?

Can we watch a $300,000.00 computer animation of the Kingdome being imploded, instead?

install realplayer to watch crappy video? don't think so. let me know when its on youtube or something...

I can see a lot of suicides inside the tunnel. Man, that really is not good.

Grey day followed by grey day followed by grey day - ride the elevated Viaduct, get a 10 minute view of Puget Sound - go in the underwater tunnel and crash into the tractor trailer in front of you cause it's just too much.

Will, I think you've found a real campaign issue. Your new group "Transit Supporters for Elevated Freeways along Downtown Waterfronts" can talk about all the suicidal people whose lives you'll save by getting another viaduct built instead of a tunnel. I mean, just look at the death toll from the I-90 tunnels.

And goodness knows, if the surface route thing goes ahead, a lot of "lesser Seattle" NIMBY's will commit suicide too. Perhaps John "Keep Seattle Crappy" Fox will commit sepukku in a drunken rage. Think about those lives too before it's too late.

If we're gonna be global warming-promoting idiots and build a freeway through downtown like it's 1950, I'd rather have it be big and ugly visually as its very existence is ethically. The tunnel is classic New Seattle: Put frosting on shit and pretend it's Angel's Food cake.

Nah, I think the downtown millionaires want the middle class drivers to all leave, so they wouldn't mind the suicides.

They might mind the smoke wafting up their buildings though.

The I-90 tunnels are a heck of a lot shorter, by the by. Really really shorter. Nice try, did you get that from Rove?

How about "self-righteous smug urban pseudo environmentalists for civic bankruptcy" while you're at it?

John Fox does more work on behalf of others in an average month than Cressona likely will in his entire lifetime.

And if you think Seattle is so crappy, vote with your feet and move. God knows we wouldn't force you to stay...

These have been linked to on the Times website for at least a couple weeks -- what post about this now?

The tunnel option seems less like a tunnel that I thought it would, and more like a viaduct with a bunch of shit on top of it.

Duh, Doug, it's the I-90 lid part II.

Also, $300K for this video?! Do they pay these hacks by the hour? I'd dog it too if I were a graphic artist and Greg Nickels was paying me by the hour to make him propoganda.

Mr. X: John Fox does more work on behalf of others in an average month than Cressona likely will in his entire lifetime.

Y'know, I am truly humbled before such selfless devotion to one's fellow humans. I understand that Karl Marx did a lot of work on behalf of others too.

And if you think Seattle is so crappy, vote with your feet and move. God knows we wouldn't force you to stay...

Despite the monorail's defeat, I still have faith in Seattle's potential. That's why I'm doing what I can do to make Seattle a better place. And who knows, if we environmentalists succeed, maybe John Fox will be the one who has to move.

Will in Seattle: The I-90 tunnels are a heck of a lot shorter, by the by. Really really shorter. Nice try, did you get that from Rove?

If I recall correctly, I think Will's referring to his argument that a waterfront tunnel will become a magnet for suicides. Tell ya what, Will, this sounds pretty convincing actually. It's the kind of argument even that makes you sound like you're a sane person. So I say, go for it.

Maybe the local papers could do some write-ups. I could see the headlines: "Tunnel suicide death trap?"

Mr. X -
This is like the 4th time you've told someone on the Slog that they should leave Seattle when they have disagreed with your position on something.

Seeing as you're the one that seems to have trouble with everyone else, maybe you should be the one giving consideration to moving on down the road...

So sorry to disappoint you, but I'll be here long after most of you newbie types move on to that next tech gig.

I do feel sort of sorry for the next city you move to and try and recreate in your image, though (well, unless it's Houston).
