There was an amazing turnout from the Seattle Hip Hop community. Here's what we learned - DV One is being prosecuted for Assult 3, a felony assult charge. His next court date is next Wednesday Sept 27th at 8:30 am at the King Country Courthouse room E1201, 516 3rd avenue, downtown Seattle. Please show up to support. We have seen this type of abuse more than too often. We need to draw the line NOW.

We have also heard that Mayor Greg Nickels has already requested an investigation of the case by the Office of Professional Accountability. This is good, but it will go nowhere unless we demand action.

They are recruited from many small Washington towns and end up serving in the “big city”. I would love to know the actual recruitment stats. A couple weeks of “sensitivity training” is not enough to overcome years of small town/small minded bigotry. Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse as to why the Seattle police department behaves time and time again like they are afraid of black people. Just be sure to write to the politicians. They can do something about this, but need to know they have the political cover. The Police Union is a very, very powerful political force in Seattle. They are probably the most influential single lobbying group. But if the community bands together we should be able to see some justice here, and end up with better public oversight of the SPD.

If Norm Maleng does not drop these charges I think we should promote a serious write-in campaign challenging him in the upcoming election.

If this had been a white Dad approaching the cops talking to his daughter, the cop would've gave the daughter one of those, "Oooh, here comes your dad, let's see what he has to say about this. I'll bet you're in real deep shit now, kiddo." then he would've greet ed the dad, maybe even with a handshake and the father's question of, "What's going on" would've been met with something like, "Andrea, care to tell your father what's going on?" or a prompt and professional summary of the events.

The fact that Toby was immediately taken out of the scenario as a parental figure and treated like a cohort speaks volumes about the humongous chasm that exists between SPD and the city's disproportionately small black population. The cops involved in this incident, particularly the female cop and the one questioning Andrea are clearly undertrained and undereducated. They responded to a simple, harmless situation with fear, insensitiviy and an overreaching abuse of authority.

I'm sure we all want these charges against DV dropped and an investigation into the responging officers misconduct to set an example once and for all. True this happens all the time, but it could be a blessing in disguise that this happened to someone as respected and loved throughout the city if Seattle if it draws proper attention and results in a positive outcome.

If not, it's just one more step towards making this place Valhalla.
