October Surprise

Posted by on September 21 at 16:05 PM

Via everyone and their mother, including Wonkette:

WASHINGTON — In the past week, Karl Rove has been promising Republican insiders an “October surprise” to help win the November congressional elections.

UPDATE: D’oh. Looks like “everyone and their mother” includes my esteemed colleague Brad Steinbacher, who posted about this very thing on Slog earlier today. (No word yet on whether he wants to be thought of as everyone or their mother).

lemme guess: a thwarted terrorist attack?

I predict an invasion of NW Pakistan, "against their wishes" (but actually with their agreement), in which the end result will be our 20,000 US troops manage to shoot lots of children and babies, quite a few women, and lots of "suspected terrorists" who turn out to be just the average resident males.

Osama will return in 2007 to successfully use nuclear weapons floated into Dubai-controlled ports in major US port cities, of course.

There are no Dubai-controlled ports in the US, Will. They sold all the US holdings of P & O after they bought it, because of the whining of racists like you. They're mostly owned by other foreign companies now.

and even if the ports were still dubai-controlled, they'd be staffed and managed by good ol' american blue collars. the workers haven't changed, just the final destination of the profits.

It's not a surprise, but I've noticed lately that GOP candidates have dropped their party affiliation from their ads and are trying to blame Democrat incumbents for the lousy party in charge, as if the Democrat minority, not the GOP majority, is responsible for the all the stupid and hateful decisions since Bush has been in office.

October Surprise?

Afternoon delight.

Ultimatum!

You already know the what, where and when.

you know the first time they pulled the "OH NO AN OCTOBER SURPRISE!? WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY BE" thing last election season, I was actually, like, concerned that some big thing was going to come out at the end and SHOCK AND AWE the electorate.

but c'mon, its just a scare tactic to try to get democrats to crouch into a ball and wait for the "october surprise" instead of attacking the GOP.

DNC Staffer 1: Should we attack the GOP?

DNC Staffer 2: Well what if they pull an october surprise that blindsides us? We've got to be ready for it. It could be anything!!

DNC Staffer 1: Oh my god you're right, we should play it safe. Karl's such a GENIUS, he could be planning ANYTHING!

DNC Staffer 2: That's right, we've got to brace for the october surpise!

GOP Staffer 1: So Karl, what are they Dems doing?

Karl: Nothing! SURPRISE!
But really, there isn't POSSIBLY anything karl could pull out of his little hat that will detract from the war. the war has gained too much mass. its become its own black hole and its increasing gravity is sucking everyting else in.

whatever the "surprise" is going to be will be as irrelevant as bush's latest round of events that has just been more of the same old talking points. thats all they have because they can't actually fix iraq, they can just hope to spin it.

the Dems should focus on pounding Rs as relentlessly as the GOP has been pounding Ds FOR SIX YEARS

October surprise? yawn....

AND ANOTHER THING: is it just me or does "October Suprise" sound like some weird variant of the "cleveland steamer" or "durty sanchez" or what??

I know. Karl Marx Rove will eat spinach in October! That's the surprise!

oh, and Fnarf - you're wrong. They still own them, six months later.

You need to learn to ferret out the news - it was on NPR earlier this week.

Tick. Tick. Tick. Achoo!

Ah, yes. Fine. Doesn't bother me a bit. You know why they still own them? Because their commitment to sell them is contingent on finding a US company that's competent to manage them. And THERE AREN'T ANY.

Seriously, anyone who thinks a port owned by a Dubai company is more "dangerous" than one owned by a German or Singaporean company is a fool. You think al Qaeda's going to be slipping a nuke into Vancouver harbour? Why don't you ask THEM if they're worried? Al Qaeda's got a bigger grudge against the UAE than they do against us, anyways. We're infidels, but they're apostates, which is a thousand times worse.

And the security lapses you should be worried about are the US's responsibility, not Dubai Port World's. They've actually been considerably more diligent than the Bush administration.
