Closed Mike!

Posted by on September 1 at 11:10 AM

The Everett Herald got a copy of Mike McGavick’s DUI arrest report.

Two things about the story. One funny. And one weird.

Here’s the funny thing. In his “candid” mea culpa last week, McGavick admitted that he “cut a yellow light too close.” However, the police report says McGavick drove right “through a steady red signal.”

Additionally, when McGavick was interviewed last week about his campaign blog DUI mea culpa, he said he got a citation, but wasn’t arrested. However, according to the report McGavick was, in fact, arrested, and at the station, he was hand cuffed to a desk.

Now, here’s the other thing: Check out the McGavick campaign’s reaction to the Herald.

Campaign spokesman Elliott Bundy said the candidate does not intend to speak about the arrest again in the campaign.

“The report is as it is,” Bundy said. “The interviews were given. Questions have been asked and answered. We don’t have any further comment on this.”

Typical. They put this out there (to frame it as they want and score the points they want…points for candor), but the minute people start asking questions, they clam up.

Siesta Mike should be his new nickname. Somebdody should have snapped his pic while he was dozing off at the station.

i'm no mcgavick fan but, really, what more can be said? dude got popped on a dui, the report is released, comments have been made. honestly, it is what it is.

waxing poetic about the perils of drunk driving or even apologizing (yet again) is a waste of time at this point. i think you're going a little overboard on this one, josh.

A white Mazda Miata? Sounds a little Jim West to me...

I hear you Kerri Harrop.
It's just that McGavick's all hopped up on being candid, and quite frankly, I've found him to be prickly and evasive.

I'm pretty sure every time a red light ticket is written, it says "steady red light". Cops don't wouldn't ever write a report that said "It was mostly yellow" Or "Had just barely turned red".

Absolutes tend to make the cop's job easier.

Well, McGavick already admitted to his (rather high) .17 blood alcohol level, but the news that the test was taken 90 minutes after his arrest is new information. I think the fact that he wasn't just drunk but shitfaced drunk is worth a second story.

I think the discrepancies are worth noting as well.

john - a "steady" red light, i believe, is meant to indicate it wasn't a flashing red light.

Mike! revealed the DUI to put his own spin on it and to neutralize it as a campaign issue. I think there are far more troubling things about Mike! than this, but this story is certainly appropriate given his original claims about the incident.

Look, .17 is pretty darned wasted, so if it was that high after ninety minutes, he was really drunk ...

too bad the guy's a Liar who works for Alaskan pimps.

For once, I actually sort of agree with Feit. Although he can never seem to fully shed his self-righteousness, at least he sticks to the inherent contradictions in McGavick's messaging and, unlike most other commentators on this issue, doesn't try to pretend that he's never made a mistake.

A much more interesting story, I think, is the weird dynamic between McGavick and his Spiritual Godfather Ted Stevens. Mikey just got caught out calling the (then unknown) senator who was blocking the transparency-in-government bill a jerk, and then looking like a fool when the senator turned out to be Stevens. And of course now Stevens's son, a state senator in AK, had all his office files carted away by the FBI yesterday.

Rather than keep harping on the DUI, why don't you start asking Mikey just what in the hell is going on with his great northern sugar daddy?
