Slog - Comments on True or False?

Love and Death is the funniest movie there is. "If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil. I think that the worst you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever."...

Woody was terrific back in the seventies. Sleeper and Bananas are hysterical. And who can possibly forget the look on Gene Wilder's face as he checks into a hotel with a sheep in Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex?

No, Love & Death is a million times funnier than Sleeper and Bananas and all that crap, and may be the funniest movie ever. It's definitely the funniest performance Diane Keaton's ever done.

That is so very true. The only movie that even comes close is Young Frankenstein.

Sleeper is cute, and Bananas gets points for the Howard Cosell scenes. But Love and Death has it hands down, if only for using the word jejune.

I would throw out "Zelig", "Everything...about sex" and "Stardust Memories" in the Woody Allen category, though that is really just to throw out some of the very funny yet obscure Woody Allen movies you should see if you haven't.

Woody Allen is a genius and has made the most important American films. I'm glad to live in a cultured, educated, city that understands this auteur. Most Americans are to ignorant to grasp the importance of this artist otherwise he'd be the richest man in Hollywood.

Comment by Dan Aloi

Dude -- YES!!! It's about time somebody asked this question. I LOVE this movie. And I first saw it at 14, long before I'd ever seen a Bergman film. Now that I know everything he's making fun of (almost), it's even funnier. It's soooo absurd and smart and wacky, I think someone who doesn't laugh at SOMEthing in it is severely stunted as a human being.

Comment by NOT EBERT

Ah yes - "War and Peace" = "Love and Death." Brush up your Tolstoy. Lines like: "We'll divide his letters - you take the consonants, I'll take the vowels." Wondering what dessert Keaton will serve for dinner in a Siberian setting: "Ah, sleet - my favorite." The Idiot's Convention. My first hearing of the word "meeskite". Czar Alexander complaining he doesn't have a dessert named in his honor as Napoleon does. And the brilliant use of Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije Suite" as the sound track. The old serf walking around with a clod of dirt intoning that everyone should own some land. The movie is a masterpiece and may only be surpassed by "Harold and Maude."
