Slog - Comments on This Is What Delusional Looks Like

Right-wing blogger John Hinderacker (known as "Assrocket” on liberal blogs) managed to finagle himself a tour of the Oval Office with President Bush the other day. Here's some of what he had to say about it: It was an absolutely riveting experience. It was the best I've ever seen him. Not only that; it may have been the best I've ever seen any politician. If I summarized what he said, it would all sound familiar: the difficult times we live in; the threat from Islamic fascism--the phrase drew an enthusiastic round of applause--the universal yearning for freedom; the need to...

Yep. I stand corrected. Bradley's right. It's CNN's tag.

GWB has his faults. But he is smart. You can't be a total idiot and win two terms as governor and as president. History will be more kind to him. Sort of like we are with Harry Truman today.

And why does the liberal left ridicule him for reading Camus? Can't we acknowledge that he has some intellectual curiousity?

Bush bashing is getting so boring.

Comment by Golob

Even with a big stretch, I don't think anyone could honestly consider GWB "smart" given his apparent total lack of curiosity or work ethic. Every time he has "accomplished" something, it has been on the back of his family connections.

And don't soil Truman's name like that. Bush is more like a half-assed Woodrow Wilson; potentially well meaning, but totally inept when it comes to executing his lofty goals.

Comment by fixo

For me, the question whether Bush has any intellectual depth is answered by asking anyone whether, if his or her father were, in order, a US Congressman, CIA Director, UN Ambassador, Ambassador to China, Vice President, and President (no doubt I screwed up the order), he or she would travel outside of the US all of once IN HIS LIFE before becoming Governor of Texas, and then to some Mexican border party town.

This is a profoundly closed and inert mind. The kind of mind that would be baffled by, say, the relationship between Sunnis and Shiites, on the one hand, and Muslims, on the other. Why there's still a debate about this with only 879 days to go is a mystery to me. Somebody really ought to ask him some questions about Camus. Somebody ought to ask him if he knows how Iraq came to be a country in the first place.

As for Assrocket's, "A man of extraordinary vision and brilliance approaching to [sic] genius," I can only think that Peggy Noonan can go away happily now, knowing she has a worthy successor.

I don't particuarly like GWB, but I want him to leave office with a stable Iraq, his tax cuts made permanent, and Congress taking up Social Security reform.

Yes, he won two terms. Just as Rutheford B. Hayes lost the popular vote and won the electoral to become president.

Republicans cause global warming? Then why is a large percentage of the greenhouse gases coming from India and China?

Republicans cause all the wars in the world? Opression of women? (You mean like Condi Rice?) Seattle superior to red states?

Peoples arguments fall apart fast when they use those absurd wildly extrapolated generalizations.
