Um, it's not the same little girl.
The cover photograph is from 2005, and is visible elsewhere on the web. Maybe the NYT saw it.

I love to shop, and the photo just screams "shopping is fun!". It's great.
All the hair shirt environmentalists telling us to stop consuming need to look at how happy that little girl is with all her toys. Every little girl in the world should be so lucky.
