Re: Federal Judge Rules NSA Wiretapping Illegal

Posted by on August 17 at 15:10 PM

George W. Bush has shown such towering contempt for the U.S. Constitution—that thing he placed his hand a bible and swore to uphold and defend when he took the oath of office—that he really ought to be forced to spend the rest of his life reading it out loud to himself in the corner of some prison cell somewhere. So my favorite line from today’s ruling is this arch smackdown of our Dear Leader:

The President of the United States is himself created by that Constitution.

When you say something truthful—read: angry and rude—about George W. Bush, Republicans scold you for not having sufficient respect for the office of the presidency. But Bush—and his Republican apologists—have so no respect for the document that, as Judge Taylor pointed out, created the presidency itself. If they don’t show respect for our constitution, where do they get off demanding respect for their president?

I cried for joy when I heard about the Court's decision. I know it is nowhere near the end of Bush's bullshit, but it's a step in the right direction.

p.s to Dan: I wish this country had more people like you.

I is upside my self with joy.

Pres is smart, me dum.

Law not good for man beast.

Sorry to be a buzz kill, but what does this really mean? Are they going to ITMFA?

Please help me have hope. I don't want to wait til two thousand fucking eight.

Mike, news flash, you're going to have to wait until 2008. Unless you want President Darthy Cheney.

Repugs: I greatly respect the presidency -- which is why I think that the Chimp sitting in that office is an embarassment and a genuine threat to the future of the country. Ever time he opens his mouth, every decision. And the world agrees.

Dan, when will you run for president?

No...really.

We need you.

Ya, what does this mean?
If the president swore to uphold the constitution of the United States then what happens when he doesn't. What are the consequences? If nothing happens then what is the point of swearing in the president and asking him to uphold the constitution. Shouldn't this be grounds for impeachment.
The last time a president was involved in wiretapping (Nixon/Watergate) and thinking he can get away with it he was impeached.

Sorry, but this means NOTHING. I'll bet a quarter this ruling gets reversed on appeal (in the Cincinnati district court? Are you kidding? Cincinnati is the buckle on the bible belt).

Further, even if it doesn't get reversed, trust me. It will not stop the wiretapping. Note that, despite the ruling, even the ACLU has agreed that the wiretapping goes on till "arguments can be heard".

Bush, bad as he is, is just a symptom, not the disease. The US has a long, proud history of shitting on little guys and giving big money any power they want to "protect their interests". And even if there is a remote possibility that they stop the wiretapping, nothing will be done to admonish the prez. It just won't happen. Trust me. Read your history. No president has ever been taken to task for being the stooge of the wealthy oligarcy. You heard it here first. Where's my quarter?
