All this Project Runway mania has got me thinking about designers I love.

If my salary increased ten fold, I’d blow a fair amount of cash on Valentino and Marc Jacobs, but I’d retain my appreciation of smaller independent designers, such as Fancy Pony Land, a thoroughly charming label run by Lorna Leedy (an outfit from her Spring 2005 collection is pictured above). I was initially turned on to her work by Lipstick Traces owner Jenn Gallucci, a passionate local champion of outsider designers. Leedy’s work is always inspired by nature (not nearly as hokey as it sounds) and is characterized by her unmistakable, engaging leather appliqué work.

I’ve since bought four of her shirts, including a customized version of this one (she made mine red and added “ejaculating” rhinestones). If my apartment caught on fire, I’d grab my cat, my vintage Marantz receiver, and that shirt on my way out the door.

I also picked up this one with circling great white sharks, and this one with angry, “killer” tomatoes, and I’m still coveting this skirt covered with happy teeth and peppermints.

I’m also a huge fan of the shirts and jewelry on the website of indie collective Chocosho and the handbags at Queen Bee Creations (though their ubiquity is making them slightly less appealing).

I think Balenciaga and Lanvin continue to create beautiful pieces, season after season. I love everything they send down the runway. I also think that the girl that wears them has to be ballsy and confident.

Too bad most everything from those houses costs more than I make in a month.

dude, i hate to break it to you, but the outfit in that picture is UUU-GA-LAY. that's even worse than ugly.

in fact, if i saw you walking down the street in it, i'd laugh under my breath. or i'd think you'd just gotten off your shift at teatro zinzanni or something. ew.

Indie designers don't do clothes for men (as opposed to hott young boys), so I don't have a fave.

For moderately priced sportswear I used to like Tommy Hilfiger, but not so much lately. Ben Sherman has gone straight into the toilet in the past two years. As for INC -- the Macy's house brand featured on P:R last night -- the part they left out of the show was "you will be required to use the nastiest fabric in the world, guaranteed to pill and fuzz after one cleaning, and all of your seams must pucker and bind". Because that's what INC is all about. You can get better-made crap at Walmart.

Socialarsonist--you'd never see me walking down the street in that skirt (below the knee=not for me), but how can you deny that top?

I'm really excited about the last two seasons of jil sander. miu miu's recent show was stunning. and I want to buy everything ever made by duckie brown.

okay, fine, the top is only mildly ridiculous. it does remind me of the cami to a pajama set i got at target when i went off to college years ago....

Yay for Fancy Pony Land! Lorna's a Bainbridge native, so I gots nuthin' but the love for her. (Now if only I could afford her clothing...)

As for other favorite designers, I just stocked up on some great stuff from Miranda Caroligne when I was in SF this last weekend: http://www.mirandacaroligne.com

gotta go with social arsonist here. I like the attempt at a dramatic, non-repeating design on the skirt, but alas it really does look silly here. and the top is a touch too far on the young side.

I guess It's us VS. Japan in The Enthusiastic Support of Amateurism World Championships.

Now, back to David Hasslehoff at the So You Think You Can Sew news desk.

i just crafted a long, carefully crafted, hyperlinked post with all my loves and it was ousted by the spam filter. it wouldn't even let me back space to revise the draft. argh!

the abridged version to please mister spammy:

Nanette Lepore's fall 2006 collection. rich colors, soft fabrics.

Anna Corinna's soft leather handbags. like butter. i've been combing ebay for the sister saddlebag or city tote in tobacco with the second generation hooks (the first have a reputation for coming undone).

Remix Vintage shoes out of LA. New shoes, old designs. Edie's on Pine carries a few styles.

Yoshimi Designs fitted jackets for men and women (local). deconstructed to fit your curves.

Anna Banana's House of Pretty Parlor line. she tailor fits the clothes to you. fkkin incredible.

there, i've confessed my sins.

Call me a snob, but I find it hard to justify spending $288 on a skirt, especially when there are a myriad of small scale folks out there making cuter ones and selling 'em for $30. But I'm not going to tell you who they are becuase then you'll all buy the one of a kind shirt I'll be coveting next week.

Also, I repeat: those skirts are $288. Jesus.

I just finished editing two Block Party video interviews with super silky smooh Seattle custom clothes designer Chrissy Wai-Ching. She's got it goin on!

First Interview Segment

Wow, that outfit in the picture is absolutely dreadful. Very Seattle in its lack of finesse or class. It's as if the designer tried to hide her lack of talent and craftmanship behind block color and bumble bees. Such post modern hippie crap.

betsey johnson is my vice, as well as marc jacobs and cynthia steffe. obey and WESC and industry and gentle fawn are all beyond fabulous. i love raw straight leg denim (and secretly love the gap for their fall line, as their extensive sizes mean their jeans fit my bandonkadonk) and the fall lines from free people (so many colors of wool, cable knit tights) and bcbg and tulle. i am the fucking QUEEN of sale shopping, and working at aprie means i indulge frequently. ugh ugh ugh vapid consumerism!!

Fancy Pony Land is one of the few "indie" lines that is actually well constructed. Too many young designers ignore the "craft" for the "art".

I am a huge Yoshimi Designs fan.

A Seattle designer done right.

The clothes make me faster, and I am also able to perform all my kung fu moves in them.
