Black Hair; Korean Capital

Posted by on August 17 at 15:12 PM

This documentary on the Korean American domination of the black American hair market has its problems—it lacks sophistication, the necessary Marxist analytic tools and moves, and a sense of humor—but the subject alone is fascinating. 111kelis.jpg Sisters are not doing it for themselves.

This picture you've posted is ferociously hott. thanks.

Yeah, as a sista I must say that no, we can't do it for ourselves. We buy our weaves and extensions from Koreans but they also "produce" the product themselves. I for one think that Russian women produce the best quality hair but the Koreans, they got quantity.

yumm.

Charles, if you have a strong stomach, you should really google for "the bubble sisters". They were a Korean girl pop group in the 90s that venerated their favorite soul singers by, oh god, just google the link. It's absolutely horrifying, and they thankfully pulled that infamous shtick immediately after... but Korea, needless to say, is still dealing with some basic race issues in mainstream culture, to put it very mildly.

I'll second Matt. It's too bad that the Korean music show Music Video Heaven is no longer on the air (used to be on the international channel) since that'd give you a clear, immediate idea of what Matt's taking about. At least in the late 90s/early 00s, Korean music producers would insist that their rap/r&b artists insert the n-word whenever possible. Commercial issues, I guess.

Wow. A couple of n-bombs is nothing compared to full-on mammy blackface. That's .... wow.
