Who’s Really to Blame For Katrina Woes

Posted by on July 13 at 12:40 PM

Not the mayor. Not the governor. Not FEMA. Not the even the Bush Administration. The real culprit in the societal breakdown before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, according to two prominent right-wing leaders: “black culture.”

Rev. Grant Storm, a white minister and president of Conservative Christians for Reform, said:

“The mentality of ‘government’s going to bail me out. Where’s the government?” is “in the black culture,” Storm said. …

“When the government doesn’t come and help them, frankly all they do is yap and complain,” said Storm, instead of “saying ‘Hey, I better go get a job, I better go on my own, I better go find an apartment, I better go take care of myself and my family.

“They are waiting for more FEMA money, they are waiting for more relief money and it ain’t coming, or it’s coming slow; meanwhile, the surrounding parishes — the predominantly white parishes — they are rebuilding on their own, and the same way in the Gulf of Mississippi,” said Storm. “Orleans — they still don’t have their flooded cars off the streets.”

White Southern homeowners haven’t had any problems “rebuilding on their own”? Oh, really?

Right, because wealthy white people NEVER feel entitled to anything... ERRRRGH.

Funny. Colleagues and myself were just talking yesterday about how so many Californians are dropping their earthquake insurance because they are expecting FEMA to bail them out. You might be able to guess the demographics of people who had policies that theyy could get rid of...

And just so you know, any grant you might receive as a renter or homeowner will be very small, even if you qualify. Loans are more likely, but credit history and income opportunities etc. are still considered for eligibility. Meaning that far from everyone gets approved. The idea that folks after disaster has been declared run into a financial windfall just isn't so.

No, it's just that those white parishes consist of wealthier citizens who can afford to fend for themselves, as well as afford things like homeowner's insurance. The poorer neighborhoods cannot.

HAHA, open racism from public officials. But we should totally repeal the Voters Rights Act because the South isn't racist anymore, right?

If you believe the South isn't racist anymore, I've got an underwater tunnel to sell you, Gomez.

I guess I was misinformed; according to Storm, only the people and their cars were flooded. Apparently businesses and apartment buildings were undamaged. A homeless black person can't walk down the street without being offered job after job and apartment after apartment. All of New Orleans’s industries would be booming if only those darn black people would get back to work. Since they all were homeowners, it should be easy to rent one of the thousands of apartment that sit empty and clean.

What do they think Government's job is anyway? To support the populace that elects them? Right! It is not the job or responsibility for the Government to do anything for it’s people other than shoot them. Read the constitution people!

Did anyone actually read the link from the actual article, rather than the incredibly biased blurb presented here? If you had, you might have noticed that it's not just white Republicans making these comments.
This was a particularly telling section, "Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, the African American founder and president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND) is not willing to blame the Bush administration. Instead, he faults what he calls the 'black culture'" ...
Peterson said the black culture problem has also been fueled by "false black leaders."
"Over the last 50 years, they have heard: 'You need government' from these false black leaders like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the NAACP. They have told black people 'You need affirmative action, you need more welfare programs' and that's not what black folk need. They need less of that and more family," Peterson said. "They need to get married instead of having 70 percent of children out of wedlock. They need to teach their children to work by being an example of that," he added."

But hey, when a white guy agrees with this, he's obviously racist

Argh! Conservative nitwits (who, by the way, were *NOT* elected officials in this article) get me every time.

So, yeah, my friends in NOLA, both black & white, have had incredible problems getting insurance money for either their homes or cars; my cousin has had to move three times due to landlords illegally raising rent in the few apartments still on the market; and my other cousin in Waveland, Mississippi, doesn't even have a TOWN to go to anymore. I guess someone didn't tell my friends & family that it's "black culture" that's holding them up, when they thought it was their insurance company and government-induced confusion over if and when they can actually rebuild.

And WTF is the "Gulf of Mississippi"? It's the Gulf of MEXICO, or, if one wants to be geographically specific about a particular state, the "Mississippi Gulf Coast" or "Louisiana Gulf Coast."

Will, my last point was a writing device referred to as 'sarcasm'. Like hell the South isn't racist anymore.

Rev. Jesse Lee Petersen is also a racist. He just happens to hate people of his own race.
