Vacation

Posted by on July 5 at 11:20 AM

I’m on vacation—so no Slogging for me. I’m in Northwestern Wisconsin, home to irony-free PBR signs.

Headed into the Michigan’s UP, which I believe are the spawning grounds of our own Kelly O. Wish me luck…

Dan, that's not only the home of irony-free PBR, it's the home of Posse Comitatus, the survivalist group that wanted to secede from the U.S. about 20 years ago.

I think there's rattlers up there, too. And pumas (not the shoe).

It's da' home o' dah people dat talk like dat movie FARGO. It's also da' home of da Porcupine Mountains, and dah Copper Harbor Dump, where yah can park da truck and watch da bears. Dah bears, dey come out at dusk up dere, and yah can feed 'em candy bars out da window—dey climb all over your truck for one o' dem candy bars! Dat Dump, she's better dan any zoo you ever been too, dat's da truth, I tell ya.

didja see da tirty pointer?

As proof of my own UP connections (and I'm writing this all from memory of my youth -- no Googling):

The Second Week of Deer Camp
by Da Yoopers

It's the second week of deer camp
And all the guys are here!
We drink, play cards and shoot the bull
But never shoot no deer
The only time we leave the camp is when we go for beer.
It's the second week of deer camp:
The greatest time of year!

Works best when accompanied by an accordian and sung in a voice like the one in Kelly O's post. (e.g. "The" pronounced "Da.")

We used ta get da first day ah da Deer Season off of school. None ah da kids would show up cause dey were all out da woods, so they just let us dah whole day off!

Remind me to never go near NW WI or Michigan's UP. And I thought Missouri rednecks were annoying...

Knute Berger resigns from the Weekly, and Dan's not around to comment?

HA-HAH!

People in North Dakota sound like the people in Fargo because Fargo is in North Dakota (I'm from Grand Forks, so I know).

People in the UP sound like Canadians (my folks retired to Escanaba, which is exactly the sort of place to which people from North Dakota retire).

And both North Dakota and the UP still have better public transit than Seattle.
