Supreme Injustice

Posted by on July 27 at 18:50 PM

We just got out of our endorsement interview with Chief Justice Gerry Alexander and his opponent John Groen.

Pretty amazing turn of events that we scheduled the interview weeks ago—and it turned out to be the day after the gay marriage decision came down. Meaning: A table of Stranger fags—3 of the six Stranger Election Control Board members are gay—got to have at Chief Justice Alexander while emotions were still raw over yesterday’s, um, “imaginative” ruling.

We’ll put up an audio file of our interview with Alexander tomorrow. (Thanks for all the questions you Slog readers suggested.) It was a pretty intense interview. At one point Alexander tried to cop out, telling us that the line of questioning was making him uncomfortable. Anyway, if all-star intern Sarah Mirk stays up all night and does some fancy digital editing— you’ll hear it all on Slog tomorrow.

In the meantime, here’s one bit that the recorder probably didn’t get, but I overheard because I was lucky enough to be standing next to Dan as Alexander was making his way out. As Alexander shook Dan’s hand, Savage said, pretty calmly: “I believe you have perpetuated a terrible injustice.” Alexander responded: “I’m a big boy. I can take the criticism.” Dan got the last word: “It’s not about you.”

Dan...thanks for saying that. That made my day.

Dan should have bent Mr. Chief Justice over and taught him a thing or two about rational basis.

Better you than me, Dan. I would have used more colorful but less effective language. Something about "ass", "wiped" and "constitution" springs to ming.

Mind, dammit, not ming. Mind the merciless.

What a...dramatic...situation. All kinds of other adjectives could go there. You all rock my world.

Could you please summarize the interview also, rather than just doing an audio file? I'm hard of hearing and won't be able to understand it if it's just audio. :-( Thanks.

Woo, way to go Dan! Kick-ass. I know I wouldn't have been so calm.

In addition to what words were said (content), we could learn alot from you based on your observations of relative styles (vibes from them as people). Any attempts by any of them to let their guards down? Were you cognizant that behind the political aspirations any had admirable ethical human qualities? Did demeanor(s) trouble some of you?

Any reason from today's interviews to believe that Groen would have done anything but join J Johnson and Sanders in trying to slam the door, instead of- like Alexander- telling you that your proper venue for relief is the Legislature or the People?

Or did Groen just sit there trying not to laugh at the choice the gay commnity has in this race.

You are completely right, Dan.

Since the courts have failed, the strategy at this point must be legislative. Work hard to elect legislators who agree that it's an injustice, and who will have the courage to stand up and correct it.

Dan seems to be far more diplomatic than I might have been in the same situation. I might have hit him.

Captain Wierd:

Or did Groen just sit there trying not to laugh at the choice the gay commnity has in this race.
Not just the gay community ... the human community of Washington State.

Not that it's really a choice. Alexander got it wrong this time, but Groen would do us wrong every time. And he'd cackle evilly each and every time. Vote Alexander.

Neil, if Alexander were running against Satan himself, he'd have to beat him without my support.

I think Alexander maybe made a campaign mistake here, unless someone can make a case that he believes the child-hatin discriminatory BS in that decision. I was about to volunteer to work educating the public about Groen's financing. Now, my enthusiasm has waned.

Captain Weird:
I'm in the wider human community too, and am very troubled at the prospect of Groens happy laughing at my predicament.

Dan, this decision is karmic payback for your mendacious assertion in your advice column a few months back that the gay marriage and polygamous marriage arguments are not logically equivilent.

In that column, you claimed that the argument for gay marriage was not that the state has no right to discriminate against marriage-seekers from outcast classes, but instead that, since gay people are no longer an outcast class, society should signify its acceptance by endorsing gay unions.

Well Dan, here's a government 101 lesson for you: that second argument, true as it may be, is an argument for the legislature, not for the courts. And that's now where you get to make it.

I understand that Alexander has disappointed a lot of people here. But voting against him (or not voting at all) is not the answer. Groen is the true representative of all that is evil and he must be defeated.

I wouldn't vote for Alexander if his opponent was Satan.

Face it - if you vote for the person that oppresses you, you don't deserve equal rights.

yes, i am going to vote for gerry alexander because groen is even more conservative. sometimes, you just have to go for the "lesser of the two evils" instead of the ideal "better of the two candidates".
