Project Runway Recap #2

Posted by on July 20 at 14:45 PM

Whoa boy! Did the crazy come out last night or what!?

Because I don’t want to spoil anything for the Project Runway fans who’ll watch the encore episode on NBC Monday night at 8 pm, I’m going to hide my gushing/ranting behind the cut. So click to continue reading, unless you don’t wanna know what happened.

Last night the designers find out they get to design an evening gown for Miss USA, Tara Conner. The winning gown will be worn in the eveningwear competition when she competes for the title of Miss Universe. Fancy! Pageant fanatic Kayne, who has been designing pageant dresses for years and even owns a boutique in his hometown, is stoked. The catch is, they have to work in pairs.

Everyone sketched out their ideas based on Tara's requirements (earth tones, bare back, no plunging front), and then Tara picked her seven favorite designs. The favorites became the team leaders, and the teams would create the dress based on their design. Here's how they paired up (team leaders are bold): Keith with Bradley, Malan with Katie, Uli with Bonnie, Jefferey with Alison, Kayne with Robert, Laura with Michael, and Vincent, crazy crazy Vincent, got stuck with Angela, who (despite her 30 minutes of sucking up to him during the sketching period), didn't get picked by Kayne (she was clearly looking for a free ride, that hag).

During the dress executions, Malan, who I've admittedly been frightened of since the start, showed a sensitive side by confessing that when he was a young teen, his mother once threw his book of sketches on the floor and told him to never, ever sketch again. He was doing this to prove to her that he can do it. Awe! Maybe he's not a monster!

So everyone is working fairly well together (especially Robert and Kayne, who keep giggling...) and there are no big problems until the camera pans to Vincent and Angela, who are about three minutes away from killing each other even before they've picked out the fabric! Vincent refuses to allow Angela to help when she asks (he thinks she's completely incompetent) so Angela just sits there and does nothing, refusing to take any credit for how the dress turns out (good or bad) and nagging him about time limits. She'd snap at him, he'd snap at her! She'd totally diss the dress, he'd tell her to step three feet away.... Oh man! It was so great! And at one point Tim says to Vincent about his unfinished dress "I'm disappointed.” Vincent gleefully responds "Oh, that's okay!” He's crazy, remember?

Now let's skip ahead to the runway show. Now I know that Tara's requirements didn't allow for anything too flashy or exciting, but was anyone else surprised by the lack of awesome? Man! What a bunch of boring all those dressed turned out to be!

It was no surprise that Kayne and Robert's dress won, despite a risky pick of an iridescent purple/brown fabric. It was the most pageanty. But Uli and Bonnie's dress was pretty too. The flowing layers of fabric looked lovely when it went down the runway. The rest? Boring, boring, and pretty, but boring.

The mediocre were excused from the runway, and then it came down to two. Malan and Katie's dress was too short and unfinished. It was heavy, dark... not well done at all. And the lack of teamwork (read: brawling) between Vincent and Angela didn't impress the judges (the dress didn't completely either). Katie and Vincent were excused, so the final decision came down to Malan and Angela. One had to go home.

Yes, Malan's dress was a disaster, but Angela is the DEVIL! If they don't kick off Angela, I swear to God I'll... "Angela, you are... IN."

GODDAMMIT!! Are you kidding me!? Just as I was starting to feel like he may not be a complete creep, Malan was sent home.

This show is already killing me and it's only the second episode.

The previews for next week show Bradley (swoon!) having a difficult time with whatever the assignment is. And it's his BIRTHDAY! I hope they don't get rid of him yet. He's quiet, yes, but I think he could be awesome if they keep him around long enough. And I can't wait to see Laura go off on Keith. She calls him a shithead! And the drama begins...

Malan is a fraud. Fake accent. Fake history. Can't wait until the rags break out his true story! I agree, this season rocks!!!

Fuckin' LOVED it. I too admit that I felt very sorry for Malan especially when he cried at the end because he said he has never had many friends and he finally felt like he was part of something. My little heart broke for him and all of his pain and suffering growing up as a weirdo queer boy who liked to steal his sisters dolls and dress them up (okay, I made that last part up--but i can sure picture it)

Kook-boy Vincent has barely squeaked past the bar twice now; he's surely the next to go. Angela's a skank (her bio says she's "visionary"), but the way he treated her is absurd and inexcusable. Teamwork is as important as talent in a cooperative line of work. Vincent is a Grade A Asshole, and has the design sense of a vole, even if his fitting is good. But not even he can hold a candle to the walking atrocity that is Jeffrey. Talentless blowhard with only one trick up his sleeve: oceans of crumpled fabric. Ugly, stupid, and deaf.

I'm sorry to see Malan go, because it would have been fun to watch him swan around for a few more episodes. I wonder where he got that ridiculous accent? It belongs to none of the places he claims to have lived. It probably got him laid a lot when he was twenty but at 32, it's just decrepit. He's play-acting at being Sebastian Flyte but I ain't buying it. Not in Long Island City. He looked almost human when he cried, though.

I don't care if he looks like a cartoon villain when he laughs or shows any joy whatsoever, I ate Malan's sad story up. I liked him so much more than that HAG angela. God, I just want to sic a bag of wasps on her.

But Michael is my favorite. He should have won the last challenge.

Oh this was a nail biting episode. Only because I didn't know who I wanted to be sent home more- Vincent, crazy crazy Vincent, the ass; or bitchy Angela. I ultimately decided on Vincent, because while Angela was bitchy and annoying as hell, it was Vincent's design and he didn't let Angela have any input. That's not teamwork either. I really didn't like the fact all the judges were harping on Angela when Vincent was just to blame.
Now for the dresses- I think Kayne did deserve to win. His dress was beautiful, and I feel he almost deserved to win considering how many years he's put into the field. I almost wish I'd seen Miss Universe to see his dress.

Enigma

Vincent's haircut makes me want to commit murder. Even if my wife says "oh, that's YOUR haircut". It IS NOT!

Two of those dresses are cut down to the navel in front. What part of "no plunging neckline" did they not comprehend?

I'm glad to see Malan go, he was annoying me, although not nearly as much as arrogant, talentless, abrasive Neck-Tattoo-Boy, who is nowhere near as hip as he thinks he is and whose designs are butt-ugly.

my heart fucking BROKE for Malan. "I feel so ashamed."

a friend from last night, near tears, said, "He's the real life Willy Wonka!"

So am I, like, the only straight guy who's watching PR3?

I felt bad for Malan, especially since he took responsibility for his design and said that between him and his partner, he should be sent home.

Still. Between him, Angela and Vincent -- I wasn't sure who should go home. Vincent actually finished the dress, but he doesn't have the integrity that Malan showed (like when in the last episode he told the judges he was having doubts about the hat, when in truth he'd been gleeful.)

At least they said, "Angela, you're in -- but barely."

god, I just watched malan's exit interview and almost cried. he's a total freak, but not a fraud.

I'm straight.

Not a fraud? Can't you hear the accent sliding in and out? Born in Taiwan, grew up in Australia, Hawaii, Georgia -- and he has a mangled upper-class BRIT accent? I, uh, don't get it. Nice hair, though.

Miss Universe is on this Sunday (7/23). And I totally agree that Vincent is not to be trusted. That hat thing last week sent me up the roof.

I'm straight and I love the show. I feel the producers brought Alison on just for me.
If you aren't listening to Tim Gunn's podcasts, get the bravotv.com/projectrunway and download them. They are free and they are bitchen. Apparently most of the designers dislike Angela for her attitude. I'm with them--I would have kept Malan even though I loathe him because, of the two of them, at least he accomplished something. His dress was poorly finished, but it was a challenging design and you have to give him some credit for trying. Angela just slunk around annoying everyone.
I can't say I'm sorry to have heard the last of that accent, though.

I'm straight and love the show too (damn you, Bravo...for this AND Top Chef.)

I was ready to hate Malan big time after the whole "Road to the Runway" show...but I started liking him more...especially when I realized that he WOULDN'T be the nastiest, most self-absorbed, pretentious prick in the cast...not by a long shot... He might have been fifth or sixth.

I hated his laugh...but I felt for the sad lonely boy who could only laugh like that... :(

Is it just me or does Bradley look like he should be in Clap Your Hands Say Yeah?

Fnarf, if you remember season one, there was someone else loathesome who barely squeaked by more than once and made it to the finals: Wendy Pepper. That's the thing about this type of show: you can be the second-worst person every week and still make it to the final show.

Mr. Neck Tattoo forgot not to do that, to quote the great Todd Barry.

Ashan, you are not the only straight guy, though you may be the only single straight guy.

I'm loving this season...might be as good as season 1 possibly? I am loving hating the neck tat guy so i hope he sticks around a while. malan creeped me out in a good way, i think he left too soon. i kind of wanted the snowboarder to go, she is dull.

Neck Tat Guy has that sad mix of bravada combined with little talent.

I didn't want to like Malan either but he grew on me.

Vincent really needed to go this week. He was the leader and didn't let his team mate help. Too bad it wasn't a double elmination and they both were booted off. I actually didn't mind his dress too much, I think that is what saved him.

And did I miss something? The promos implied that someone had broken the rules and would be kicked off because of it. But unless I missed it, I didn't see that scene in the actual show.

I think this season will be as good or better that season one. I'm loving it!

The promos did promise something about going against the rules. I think that may have been in response to the non-earth-toned purpley color that Kayne chose, though. Remember, this show is about frivolity and pointlessness; expect more and you will be disappointed.

The judges have absolutely NO taste. Both of their favorites looked like things that Barbie wears. Bob Mackie-style nightmares.

That crystal shit on a boustier and fishtail? Awful.

That opening-up thing? Reminiscent of a big beige vagina or asshole after neing fucked. Gross.

And could you get any more Flash Gordon than Vincent's shoulder thingies? Please.

Malan's design (despite the unfinished hem) was the only interesting thing there.

Malan is NOT a fraud. I worked with him several years ago and everything he said on the show was true (including the accent). He is a lovely, kind and genuine person and his exit interview broke my heart. However, he was very well liked and respected, so I think he has more friends than he knows.

i am desperately searching for some sort of leak about who is going to be kicked off on the next episode. i hope its either vincent or angela. those are the two who could vanish and i wouldn't even notice.

i hope its not keith. i have some sort of feeling it might be. i know he's a bit egotistical, but he does create some beautiful pieces. especially for someone who normally only works with menswear.

however, my favorite and the most unrecognized of them all is MICHAEL. why is he never giving the credit he deserves?! the coffee filter dress was SO innovative and his dress tonight was so creatively weaved and just plain gorgeous. he's consistently good, yet consistently overlooked.. its a shame.

Yes, Michael is by far the most talented but the judges almost act like he isn't there?!? WTF? Is it because he is black? Is it because he doesn't act gay and flamboyant like some of the other "guys." His designs are brilliant and the execution and construction is perfect and so good that his pieces are ready for retail! The judges are morons if they ever vote him off.

I was wondering if it is Keith. I read somewhere that his sketches, to get on PR, looked like they were copied from somewhere else. I will try and find the article. I'm not sure if it has been talked about on this forum before.
