Middle East Ceasefire Infographic

Posted by on July 21 at 12:56 PM

The cover of the print version of today’s The Independent has forgone plain text and instead features a large infographic depicting the state of affairs in the Middle East—who’s for and against an immediate ceasefire. Brilliant and infuriating:

That graphic can be used for pretty much any situation involving Israel.

Israel has a right to defend herself. America is going out on a limb to stand strong with the Jewish people during this difficult time. A bunch of peace loving Rachel Corries would get us all killed. The Stranger was pro-War against the conventional Seattle wisdom, and now The Stranger is standing strong with the local Jewish community in backing Israel. We're lucky to have one real Newspaper willing to print the truth instead of the photos of Lebanese children like Seattle Times.

um... whole world... um... not me. sorry about that fucker in the WH, btw. for what that's worth to you and all.

Tomorrow, July 22, 2006, by the way marks the 60th anniversary of the birth of mideast terrorism - the zionist bombing of the King David Hotel (killing 91).

What, why don't they just knock that shit off, Mr. Blair.
So, it looks like the US "'Knocking Shit Off' Policy for Foriegn Affairs: Middle East" doesn't have much of a following overseas? Imagine that.

Josh - the Stranger printed this graphic, so why are you raving about how much the Stranger supports Israel's actions? your post sounds rehearsed.

Yeah, it's not like we have a dearth of pictures of Lebanese kids with their arms and legs blown off, after bombing civilian apartment buildings, right?

Meanwhile, we get to pay for this whole thing, because that's how it works.

Today's fatality rate in Iraq: bigger.

Whether The Stranger is pro-Israel is irrelevant here. The point of this post is the graphic and how it effectively communicates a fact (and whatever accompanying abstract interpretations) that could otherwise have been conveyed with text (which would probably have had less connotative impact).

^^^rebuttal by Donald Rumsfeld:
"Iraq? Iraq is Old War. The center of gravity is shifting to a New War. War in Lebanon."

EDIT: rebuttal to Will. People posting faster than I can type.

I understand the point The Independent is trying to make here but, actual political considerations aside, standing alone against the majority for your beliefs can also be viewed as a form of strong leadership.

Nice attempt to apply the 'ol FOX spin, there Papson. We are almost completely inactive in this crisis. That's "leadership" alright!

How'd the last war that strong leadership got you into work out?

How can you rebut a Fact? You want to start telling me the kids aren't dead? Or that those weren't Isreaeli bombs dropped on civilian apartment buildings and airports?

What about Iraq? Got WMD? Or is it fine that we're literally giving mission orders to "kill any military age males in the city" (which by my standards means anyone 13-73).?

Look, we're talking massive clvsterfvck on a Bushian Rove scale of ten gigazillion. Quagmire up to the armpits, no solutions, just endless debt and tax cuts out the ying yang.

And all for an area that's SMALLER than WASHINGTON STATE.

Excuses, like unprovoked sexual assaults of German leaders, won't work.

How come no one can spell Israel? It's not that hard.

Israel wouldn't be dropping those bombs on Lebanon if Lebanon had a real government, one strong enough to see that half their country wasn't controlled by heaavily armed religious fanatics bankrolled by Syria and Iran with extermination on their mind. Funny how religious kooks who TALK about killing faggots in this country are worthy of scorn, but religious kooks in other countries who actually DO IT in others get your sympathy. And innocents are only worth talking about if they're not in Israel.

This infographic will become a meme. Mark my words. At least, I hope it will.

Rachel Corrie was a threat to the very existance of Israel and the Jewish people. She had to be killed, but not by a person. God killed her.

Yeah, nice argument, troll. Your name may be "anonymous" here, but you and I both know that somewhere, you, the person who keeps typing this rubbish, does exist, and you and I both know that you're a pinched-off bubble of scum, unfit for even the sewer system.

Dozens of innocents in Israel have died in this conflict while hundreds have died in Lebanon. Most Americans, such as John Bolton, and most Israelis don't give a fuck about those Lebanese casualties (kind of like how Americans only care about the 2,500 American troops who have died in Iraq while the 30,000-plus Iraqi casualties don't matter).

This whole situation between Israel and Lebanon started when Hezbollah attacked a military target. Israel responded by bombing the shit out of Lebanon's civilian population. Great fucking response.

Hezbollah hides their military power in civilian neighborhoods, often with the enthusiastic support of those neighbors. From a military target perspective, there isn't any difference. Yeah, it sucks. But the poison of Hezbollah isn't ever going to go away on its own.

The Hezbollah bombs, on the other hand, have no other function than civilian casualties. Israel is killing civilians as an unavoidable byproduct of killing Hezbollah; Hezbollah is killing Israeli civilians for the sheer unadulterated pleasure of killing.

This has nothing to do with Lebanon, which is an imaginary dream state anyways. Syria and Iran, the real enemies here, are the ones who chose to fight this war in the streets of Lebanon, not Israel. Those streets are governed by Hezbollah with Syrian and Iranian money, not Lebanon. Lebanon ceased to exist thirty-five years ago.

Western hand-wringing over these battle zones ignores the real power struggle going on. It's fun to pretend that these states, like Lebanon and Jordan and Gaza Palestine are full of oppressed liberal democrats, but they aren't. Neither are Syria and Iran. They're full of people whose only political imaginings for fifty years have been the apotheosis of death.

Rachel Corrie was hiding in a civilian neighborhood. The peaceful bulldozer man couldn't see her. That's why she died.

Rachel Corrie was staying with a family that enjoyed watching suicide bomber tributes on TV at night. Instead of Project Runway, they would watch programs that glorified the wonderful sacrifice of the martyrs who set themselves off in coffee shops and buses. They would congratulate them in the street on their great honor, to have given their son or daughter to God.

This is just more of the same. The Arabs attack Israel, Israel strikes back, and Israel is blamed for the thing in the first place. The Palestinians and the Arabs in the region don't think Israel should have ever existed in the first place, so I dont doubt they would back a cease-fire.

Right FNARf:
I agree - Rachel Corrie was a threat to Israel and the very existance of the Jewish people. She viewed bad materials at night in the homes of Palestinians and must have harbored bad thoughts and evil intentions, just like all the people in the Sunni and Christian neighborhoods in Beirut who had their apartment buildings flattened last week. You know they had some Shiites in there somewhere. Rachel Corrie was hiding to, with Arabs, or at least near Arabs, behind bulldozed rubble of their homes. She was so sneaky. Bulldozer man is peaceful.

I said it before, I'll say it again.

Everyone in the region needs a cockpunch.

The Stranger has guts and balls to speak out against conventional Seattle wisdom. Israel is a friend to America, and we all benefit when terrorists die. This war will bring peace.

The Stranger headline said it all - "Was this dentist's house worth Rachel Corrie's life." Anyone stupid enough to die for a dentist's house deserves a Darwin award. I love The Stranger.

Josh is a robot. Anyone, after reading only three of his posts, could ghost write them & no one would notice. This robot's views aren't original, nor are they constructive, except as a fine example of the thinking behind the violence: none. It's Terminator happening today-- the machines have won, and it's up to the humans to end their violence.

Iron. Like a Lion. In Zion.

Hi. I have posted a simple PDF that says: "Cease Fire in Lebanon Now." I'm hoping that people will print it out and put it in their windows.

Just wanted to spread the word. Thanks.
