Is There A Doctor in the Slog?

Posted by on July 15 at 20:42 PM

Does this sound familiar to anyone—a head and/or chest cold that lasts for 2-3 weeks with heavy coughing, totally clogged sinuses, but no fever? And don’t say it’s allergies because my girfriend got it about a week before me, and it’s followed the same path for both of us: starts in the chest, moves to the head, then back to the chest, then the head again— like a viral yo-yo. Anyone else out there experiencing this summertime sickness? Any tips? Magical remedies? Secrets on making phlegm less repulsive?

YOu should definetly get it checked out by a doctor becuase while colds can be persistant (especially if your asthmatic) it could be developing in to something more serious like bronchitis. Try steam inhalation to clear out your sinuses and drink as many fluids as you think can hold.

Why are posing these questions in a blog post?! Doesn't the Stranger give its employees medical benefits?

Hey David; that *is* the (new) employee medical benefits plan. You must first ask a question in the blog; if not answered in 7 days, you have to call the 900 number on the back of the card and ask a psychic; if that doesn't show improvement in 7 days, you get to go see a doctor.

Crap. I've had something like this for just a week and thought it must be almost over. Now my wife has it.

Alex: Thanks for the chuckle. :-)

IANAD, but check out sinusitus:

If that's it, try Neti pot ... which will help clear things much faster.

A friend had something similar, and recommended Mucinex to make the mucus go away faster. I had something almost similar, but it never went down into my chest, stayed in my throat and was super phlegm-tastic. That went away after about a week.

I am totally am just getting over the same thing. See a doctor. Drink plenty of fluids, and take a "Benalyn"-style medication for during the day. (Non-drowsy, of course, so you can continue your important Stranger duties!) Hang in there...it will go away!

A friend of mine just had the same thing. Her doctor recommended Mucinex and patience, and it went away in about three weeks.

I'm currently recovering from something similar, but it only lasted four days. I recommend ten grams of Vitamin C a day.

You should check to make sure it's not a sinus infection. I had something like this and just thought it was a bad cold, because I had no fever or anything. I ended up having to go to an ear/nose/throat specialist after 6 weeks of it. You might be ok to wait, but better safe than sorry.

A very similar thing has been going through my office. I had it for about two and a half weeks, and then was super fatigued for another week or so. For the coughing, and especially if you have a sore throat at all, try Throat Coat. It's a tea made by Traditional Medicinals. Madison Market has it for sure. I think QFC carries it too. Make sure to follow the instructions. You have to brew it for 10 to 15 minutes. And add honey. If you're feeling as bad as I was, it's like a minor miracle. Best of luck with the recovery.

Steam, fluids, spitting, heat (either via exercise or layers (sleeping or wearing).

Benadryl for Sinus is most effective at least as a short-term clearup for me, but you'd be amazed how what works best varies from person to person. But you need to clear it up over the short term.

I had it too, and nothing I did (mass amounts of liquids, smearing myself with vicks vaporub, watching the Mariners 1995 highlight video) helped. You just have to let the virus live its awful little life.

Speaking of mystery diseases, has anyone had the 24-hour total (and I mean TOTAL) exhaustion one with no cold symptoms but caught the same way you'd catch a cold? My brother and I have each had it twice this summer, and each time caught it from the other.
WTF?

Oooh, I know!

Quit smoking!

I swear, this "folk remedy" worked great for me when I had the same thing.
