In Case You Missed It

Posted by on July 21 at 14:24 PM

The Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act passed in the House by a vote of 390-33 after Democrats defeated Republican attempts to gut the act by amending several of its provisions out of existence. Among the rejected amendments were: an amendment that would use turnout figures instead of a history of discrimination to determine which states were covered by the Act; one that would eliminate language assistance to people who have difficulty speaking English; and one that would require the Act to be reauthorized every 10 years, instead of every 25.

The 33 members (all Republicans) who voted against reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act, as reported by the Birmingham Times, were:

Jo Bonner and Terry Everett of Alabama; Trent Franks and John B. Shadegg of Arizona; Wally Herger, John T. Doolittle, Edward R. Royce, Gary G. Miller, Dana Rohrabacher, John Campbell, all of California; Joel Hefly and Thomas G. Tancredo of Colorado; Tom Price, John Linder, Lynn A. Westmoreland, Charlie Norwood, Nathan Deal and Phil Gingrey, all of Georgia; Dan Burton of Indiana, Iowa’s Steve King, Richard H. Baker of Louisiana, Roscoe G. Barlett of Maryland, New Jersey’s Scott Garrett; Virginia Foxx and Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina; South Carolina’s J. Gresham Barrett, John J. Duncan Jr. from Tennessee and six from Texas: Sam Johnson, Jeb Hensarling, Joe Barton, K. Michael Conaway, Mac Thornberry and Ron Paul.

Republicans Suck.

only if you pay them.

So, our country has 33 congressional districts made up entirely (99.9999%) of white racists? I thought there may be a couple old coots who would vote against this, but 33 is more than i expected, and large portions of the delgation from entire states! wow, just when you think the South has come a long way. Can we fight the Civil War again? Just for fun this time?

Um, Longball, you know better than that. On this evidence, the country has 33 districts where about half are anti-civil-rights legislation. That's about all you need to get a safe 75-80% vote every time.

32, if that. Ron Paul is anything but a racist. Despite the Rep tag, he votes his strong libertarian convictions, which include eliminating Federal meddling. Naming a bill so that you look like a bad guy for not voting for it, to anyone who doesn't actually know its contents, probably ranks high on his list of reasons not to vote for something, too.

Yeah, good point FNARF. OF course the exageration was just my drunken rage. I actually found it more alarming how large a contingent from certain states went against this, Georgia, Texas, etc. I guess not a shocker, but upsetting. and damn it's hot out!

And remember, plenty of people, like our good ol' buddy BC here, are more than happy to wrap their opposition to civil rights in libburtarian clothing, even in nicely blue states. After all, racism doesn't exist if you look away. Those 390 districts whose rep voted yes are hardly all bastions of liberalism.

Whoohoo! None from Virginia, thank god.

That being said, I agree with Fnarf. And Libertarians can kiss my flat white ass. Selfish, pompous and ignorant little turds.
