If I Were a Betting Man…

Posted by on July 26 at 7:34 AM

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the WA Supremes are going to uphold DOMA. I don’t think this morning’s decision is going to go our way. I’m a pessimist, I guess, and a Catholic—if you allow yourself to presume that something good is about to happen, God will be annoyed at your presumption and intervene to fuck it all up for you. So even if I thought it was likely to go our way—which I don’t—I wouldn’t allow myself to actually think that for long.

I am no more qualified to guess than you, Dan... but I will say this: I think it odd how vociferously Justice Owens came out in the press recently and then the decision comes out so quickly thereafter, and then not on the usual Thursday for the Court.

There seems to be a reason that the Court wants to call attention to this ruling. If they were just going to repeat what New York just did, why make a big deal about it, and why call attention to it?

Either it's going to smack back at New York's court or it's against us, but with a strong and eloquent dissent from Justice Owens, who is prepared for a knockdown reelection campaign.

You're probably right, Dan.

Still, I'm obsessively checking the web for news of the ruling. I suppose so I can wander round in a funk if they uphold DOMA.

I'm "guilty" of giving in to hope that the Washington court would see the justice, the humanity of this cause.

I'm crying this morning, but I'm never going to quit hoping that some day soon, this benighted country will see that we deserve this right, that it is the haters who are the sick plague on this country.
