(((GRRRLS)))

Posted by on July 10 at 14:42 PM

(((grrrls))).jpgFor those keeping a list of all the wonderful things we’ve lost to Portland, add Zac Pennington’s Parenthetical Girls, who played their CD release show at the Sunset Tavern last Saturday night to a bewildered, awestruck audience. Zac tortured us all with stern instructions, haunting story songs, and a set arrangement both childish and sophisticated. His foppish, fancy-boy antics were riveting, as he howled and swayed like a pubescent Jarvis Cocker. The new record, Safe as Houses is one of this year’s best. Pitchfork loves ‘em. Why don’t you?

Awe, Colorado/Boulder love them too, at least my radio station does =o)

Zac was always nothing more than a Rock Star.

I've loved 'em since they were called Swastika Girls, but I always figured they'd be completely ignored.

Neutral Milk Hotel fronted by Edith Piaf.

i was bewildered because the tracks i'd heard online were upbeat & poppy (perfect opening for tullycraft), but their actual set was meandering and minimalist. it was somewhat interesting, but not what i expected.

if i'd been awestruck, i wouldn't have ended up standing in the back talking to friends. having planned to buy the album if the set were even somewhat engaging, now i'll wait for a chance to to check it out on a listening post first.
