World Cup Fever 2: Electric Boogaloo!

Posted by on June 21 at 15:03 PM

Regarding U.S.A. vs. Italy this past Saturday, I feel quite idiotic for having asserted we’d lose ignominiously when it turned out to not only be a tie but equally incompetently played on both sides. But: a FANTASTIC game! Action! Blood! Handsome Italian men grimacing! Three players red-carded and GONE! And my sportiest friend says unfounded, sweeping (and, even, completely wrong) assertions are what being a sports fan is all about (and he writes for ESPN). (He also reports that the first 18 World Cup matches broadcast on ESPN this year have garnered more than double the number of viewers as the 2002 World Cup. WORLD CUP FEVER, right here in the U.S.A.!) Tomorrow at the crack of dawn, a.k.a. 7 a.m.: U.S.A. vs. Ghana (LIVE at the George & Dragon!).

OMFG! That's only a block from my house!

USA! USA! USA!

Apologies to Ghana, but you need to lose. America needs any scrap of dignity we can muster, with all the other scr.w.ps going on.

Anyone know any other bars showing the game tomorrow morning?

We'll need all the dignity we can muster if we advance. Waiting in the second round is Brazil.

And, the best fans thus far are those from South Korea. Amazing enthusiasm and a live frickin' chicken in the stands.

Forza Azzurri!

Doug.,
I watched the US/Czech game at the Dubliner because the G&D is as difficult to get in as it is unpleasantly crowded once you do.

doug--they've been kind enough to show the early morning games at kangaroo and kiwi on aurora if that's closer.

98117: Any idea if the Dubliner will be open at 7am tomorrow?

Murphy's in Wallingford, and the Kangaroo and Kiwi on Aurora at about 74th, will both be showing the game. K&K has a VERY nice big HD TV in one room, and many jocular Ozzies in both of them.

Though I have to say, from recent experience, that guzzling down several pints of beer at 7 AM kind of ruins the rest of your day, which may be spent alternately sleeping and suffering from headache.

I hate to say it, because I was impressed with the USA's gutsy performance the other day, but I think I'm going to root for Ghana. They've earned a trip to the 16. One of the African teams has to go; they've been so fantastic to watch.

I don't know for sure but I expect they will be open. The US/Czech game was an early one.

Murphy's has some good cider.

As for that goal the US scored against Italy... deflected off an Italian defender. So, technically, the Americans still haven't scored a goal, though the Italians scored one for them.

I'm unsure if I want to go watch the game at a bar tomorrow morning. I might just go out and buy a six pack and rock and roll in my living room. How about a speakerphone conference call with a bunch of friends from around the country?

The live chicken was France, actually-- the rooster being one of the national symbol of France and all. But the South Korean fans are kind of awesome.

Spanish language Univision is out-rating ESPN, avergaging 2.7 million viewers per game...that's almost a million more than ESPN.
