The Race for the 43rd: By the Numbers

Posted by on June 22 at 14:21 PM

Our intern, Sarah Mirk, just finished crunching the contribution numbers for candidates in the closely-watched race to become the next state representative from Seattle’s 43rd District.

No surprise, Jamie Pedersen, the downtown lawyer and gay civil rights advocate, still has the same large fundraising lead that he’s held from the start of this race. Other findings: Dick Kelley, the chair of the 43rd District Democrats who has limited his contributions to $100 per person, currently has the highest number of contributors: 555. (But Pedersen, who has not limited his contributions, is right on Kelley’s heels with 529.) And in the sometimes contentious category of contributions from outside of Seattle, Bill Sherman leads with 54 percent of his contributors residing outside of this city.

(Note: The data on the total number of contributors to each candidate does not include contributions under $25.)

I think the attached graphs might need some work to match the numbers in the post. The post says Kelley has the most contributors with 555, but the graph shows him at approximately 615 and trailing Pedersen. The post says Pedersen has 555 contributors, but the graph shows it more like 655. And if slightly more than half of Bill Sherman's contributors are from outside of Seattle, that dark blue bar should be half way up the light blue bar. I know journalists and graphs don't always mix well -- perhaps this can be blamed on Excel?

Wow. That was a quick fix!

Hey Eli, not to make work for Sarah the Intern, but could you combine the two graphs to show the total money raised, and the proportions from contributors in and outside of Seattle? It would be interesting to see any non-obvious trends, esp. with Kelley, Pedersen and Sherman. I.e. you can have a lot of $5 donations from in town and then just 1 $700 donation from out of town, etc.

motown - you're right, that would be interesting. And you're also right, that would be a shit ton of work. We couldn't just combine the two graphs, we'd have to go through the donations line by line and tabulate out of state vs. in state. ::sigh:: someday...

Anyone doing a count of yardsigns? Dick Kelley, Bill Sherman, and Stephanie Pure are doing a far better job than the lame one Jamie Pedersen is at getting the word out.

Depends on where you count, Will. 43rd covers a lot of ground. In our hood, Pedersen is out in front.

OK, I don't like Preston Gates. It took way too much money raised by Jack Abramoff's sleazy dealings. It knew damn well what Abramoff was doing. J. Pederson is therefor scum, as is Bob Ferguson. Sorry, that's the way it is. Oh, yeah -- Slade "Skeletor" Gorton is a big Preston Gates partner.

As a co-treasurer for Lynne Dodson's campaign, I'd point out that figure shown for her total number of contributors is not correct. If you look at the PDC database, you'll see that we list about $4640 from small contributions, for whom names are not listed in the 'Named Contributors' total. That money came from lots of folks. I just did a count, and came up with a total of 579 contributor names that we have in our records. (I'm afraid I don't have a quick way to do the in/out of Seattle breakdown.)
