Flexcar just expanded its service into Bellevue.

Just in time for all of their beautiful, well-designed, and growth-alleviating road and highway improvements.

If the link worked, that could be interesting.

Not really just, it's been 13 days. It was in the first of June Flexcar newsletter.

Fixed the link. Sorry!

The link is wrong... :-)

BTW...Flexcar has never made any sense to me, so perhaps someone who uses it can explain it to me.

Every time I've looked into it, it has always made more sense, to me, to just rent a car from a rental agency. You can typically find a car for less than $30/day, and you get to keep it for 24 hours. Flexcar's lowest-price plan is $85 for 10 hours/month. For that amount of money, you could rent a car for nearly 3 whole days (nearly 72 hours).

Now...I recognize that you still have to pay for gas with the rental car...but still...does this really work for anyone?

I'm just curious.

ECB:the link is still wrong.

Depends on what you need the Flexcar for and how long you need it. I use it mainly for a few hours at a time, such as grocery shopping or may be going to visit a friend for a few hours who are out of easy reach of Metro.

Remember when you rent a car you still need to pay for insureance which can run another $20-25 a day and that with the sales tax which around 18% you are looking at between $50-60 for a day. It simply comes down to what you need it for and how long.

You can buy an annual FlexCar membership for $40. The car's are $9 an hour. It's great for rides to/from the airport and half-hour grocery runs.

If you rent a car from a rental agency, you have to go to the rental agency to get the car. If I need to run to a hardware store, there's a flexcar across the street, and several more within a few blocks. Having a car whenever and wherever in the city you need it is the real advantage. And, they acknowledge that a traditional rental car is cheaper for long periods of time: members get a discount at Enterprise.

...and for all those poor folks out there (like me), there's a low-income program at FlexCar. The rate is $5 an hour with no montly fee. Also for those looking for work, job-search related trips (requiring proof of an interview etc.) are free. Not sure the website advertises the program, but it exists.

Adding one point: Kirkland's had a Flexcar about half a mile southeast of Downtown Kirkland since at least 2004. Funny that Bellevue, larger and more transit friendly, had to wait until now to get their first one.
