Muralist Michael Fajans Dead

Posted by on June 13 at 10:27 AM

He died in a motorcycle accident yesterday, the P-I reports this morning. I don’t know his work, and I’d never met him, but I’ve heard artists speak fondly of him, especially those in the GSA building I wrote about last week. He had a studio there. His partner of 20 years, Cathryn Vandenbrink, led the effort to build the Tashiro-Kaplan building, which, with its artist lofts, low-cost housing, and gallery spaces has just about single-handedly revitalized the art scene in Pioneer Square. Fajans was only 58. Vandenbrink says there will be a party to celebrate his life.

His work is quite unusual -- I would call it cosmological realism. If you can brave the Feds, check out his mural in the lobby of the Federal Courthouse.

Also his beautiful magician pieces (which are actually self-portraits) at Sea-Tac.

rest in peace.

i went to school with pepper - my heart goes out to you and your family.

Michael was my neighbor at the Fed Center....his studio was just across the hall....yes, his work as an artist was beyond beautiful - but behind the art - he was the most extraordinary man I had ever met. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. I was blessed to have him as my best friend and mentor. My love for you is eternal Michael!

I went to college at Antioch in Ohio with Michael and a crowd of free-range artists; we went on to work in dance, music, politics, visual art, theater... Michael has always been a fiery nucleus in his community molecule. We will miss his grace and gifts, here and around the world.

I drove by the tragic scene on 99 that morning. I pulled over as soon as I was off the highway, and I couldn't help but cry. I knew in a weird way that it was someone very, very special.

Though I didn't know Michael, I send my love to his spirit. What a wonderful person to have blessed this planet.

We can see clearly that death serves no purpose to life.We will miss your art and your spirit.

Mr. Fajan's was a great man was alway's into his work, but no much into his work as he did on his family. His Son Pepper dated my sister and its a great loss for him right now. The day it happened was very tragic.
