Slog - Comments on Hot Gay Animal Orgies!

An article in this month's Seed magazine argues convincingly that same-sex sexuality is not a mere genetic aberration, as Darwin believed, but a natural, and probably necessary, fact of life in the animal kingdom. (Darwin's theory of sexual selection, in short, states that males compete to procreate with as many females as possible. Females are reluctant; males are horny. Evolutionary success is defined by the quality of offspring. So any aberration from this relentless drive to procreate is a waste of precious fluids.) Now this: Giraffes have all-male orgies. So do bottlenose dolphins, killer whales, gray whales, and West Indian...

The problem is that her claim relies on group selection, which, as is noted at the bottom of the linked article, is extremely hard to establish empirically. No doubt there is a lot of sexual diversity in the animal kingdom; I just don't know whether that means the theory of sexual selection (which has gotten a lot subtler since Darwin's time) is now defunct. Her blithe assertion that every animal is bisexual (I was fond of this hypothesis in high school) is equally problematic. My personal suspicion (not even a hypothesis) is that female homosexual behavior is not generally exclusive, while male homosexual behavior often is.

In other news, the female equivalent of penile fencing in bonobos is called G-G rubbing, which for some reason I find even more hilarious.
